    What is wrong with 50cycles?

I have visited 50cycles a few times and indeed live close by. Their premises which they have occupied for a few years are a normal modern industrial unit, approx 2500 sq ft situated on an industrial estate in an industrial area of the town. While I'll refrain from comment on other recent matters...

    Ezee Torq Battery

I have a Torq 1 with NiMh battery and a Sprint originally Li-ion but now NiMh. 1) my preference is very much for NiMh given the short battery life experienced by many Li-ion users, including the original on my Sprint. 2) Range can vary enormously depending on terrain, rider effort, speed and...

    What's Missing?

Their clinic is has disappeared as well, lets hope it signifies an end to a period on this forum which I personally have found rather depressing.

    Getting broken spokes fixed

Like Flecc I have used the 14g British made spokes from SJS cycles to rebuild a motor wheel that was originally fitted with 13g spokes, and have had no problems. I have used SJS cycles on a number of occasions and found their service to be excellent.

An Engineering Challenge - The A-Bike!

I'm by no means an expert on air propulsion but most of the motors I know of are either air turbines which work on a similar principle to a tiny windmill.. in a hurricane! or vane motors, the principal of which is shown here. Clicking on the picture should launch an animation demonstrating the...

An Engineering Challenge - The A-Bike!

The old mining locomotives used a very large tank pumped up to relatively low pressure of probably about 150 psi. A lighter more compact modern solution would need a smaller tank but at a very much higher pressure to store a useful amount of energy. A SCUBA tank pumped up to its typical rated...

Do try one on hills before buying as not all are good hillclimbers, I know Sheffield has a few hills worthy of the title!

An Engineering Challenge - The A-Bike!

Don't forget the exemption from motor vehicle legislation that we enjoy applies specificly to "bicycles with an auxilliary electric motor", so under existing legislation an air powered machine would be considered a motor vehicle. The air tank would also come within the scope of the stringent...

    Energy measurement

James, I'm afraid with measurements of AC power such as the mains things are not that simple and V x A doesn't usually equal watts! There is another factor in the equation known as power factor which arises from the fact that with alternating current the current and voltage are not necessarily...

what sort of route for pleaseure riding

That particular bike gave little assist beyond about 12 mph so on the flat Trail it was quite easy to pedal beyond that. The riding style was always full throttle but the speed was high enough that the assist was often minimal. At that time I wasn't particularly fit and while I did pedal to the...

what sort of route for pleaseure riding

You may be surprised just how far you can get on the Camel Trail with negligible gradients and a more or less constant speed. My previous bike would easily do 30 miles on the Camel yet it struggled to do 20 on normal roads and when I tried it on the hilly Clay trail from St Austell to the Eden...

    Energy measurement

James, as a NiMh user I have never made any measurements with Li batteries (The only one I ever had was secondhand and unserviceable). I can confirm that with NiMh the green light is not a trickle charge, when the LED turns green no current flows to the battery and the charger consumes a mere...

It Might Be Legal? But Is It Ethical?

I don't recall feeling the need to make to make such a remark before Des. In the past I've either found threads either interesting or uninteresting but I find this thread, and a small number of previous threads on a similar subject irritating in the same way that I find all public airing of...

A forum member sold a Quando on Ebay last autumn, here's the link. With spring just around the corner this might be a better time to sell.

Are cycle lanes a good thing or a bad thing?

Are those dotted lanes with the cycle symbol really cycle lanes? They're generally treated as car parks where I live.

    Energy measurement

My figures were from last year. I've took the Torq out for the first good ride for many weeks today and disappointingly got a yellow at 16 miles, a far lower figure than I've seen before, it could be me out of practice or it could be that particular battery losing capacity. I'm currently...

    Chains

Usually a standard 114 link chain is not long enough for a e-bike with an extended rear triangle which will need up to 140 links, in that case it's normally necessary to buy two chains, and use a portion of the second to extend the first. Alternatively a friendly bike shop may have a few links...

    Chains

9 speed chains are narrower than others, with some 10 speed chains being narrower still. All bicycle chains however have the same pitch of 1/2". The reason for the width difference is that the cassette sprockets are closer together with increasing numbers of gears and therefore the chain...
