You don't need to oil a belt drive or use so much degreaser so I suppose both systems have pros and cons. Chains will just rust away to nothing so from that point of view they are better.

Veer do a joinable belt drive, it is designed for frames with horizontal dropouts. You could maybe modify a chain tensioner, remove the chain sprocket and replace with one of their rear sprockets , a filler middle plate and a bearing. https://www.veercycle.com/en-gb
