What should I buy as my first e bike?

You won't get anywhere near the quoted 70 miles range, so you will have to charge it at work. You might get 40 miles if you pedal hard. ...but 60 miles a day on an electric bike is a lot to ask. You'll be riding more than 4 hours every day!

    Is this possible?

3 years is when they often start to fail. 700 cycles us another common failure point. I just don't want to encourage you to spend your hard earned on something that may be at the end of its life.

What's the Smart e-bike really like...

I've heard that its a great bike for running over dogs in the park. If you put suspension forks on it you barely even notice. Just a slick, designer B-dump, B-dump.

    Is this possible?

I always use BMSbattery, but I hear good things about Panda (uk). If you want to keep the existing controller you need to work out if it is sensored or not. 3 wires to motor is sensorless, 7 is sensored. But, before you go throwing any money at it you need to consider that the battery may be...

    Is this possible?

The proposed new motor is direct drive, so no gears. This means it will be low torque. Presumably you have a 250w (15a) controller, and a battery capable of around 18-20 A (perhaps less). To run that motor in the sweet spot you will need something like 30 A. If I were you, I'd get another...

Go for the 7 speed one then.

Bike wont go Faster Than 20mph on down hill.

If it's a DD motor then regenerate is sort of part of the package. If its a geared motor, it could be a stuck clutch, which could also cause it to regenerate. Either way, repeat the downhill section with the motor disconnected.

    Quick fit chain links

Usually 6/7/8 speed chains are the same size, but sometimes the 8's are a bit slimmer. Have you got a vernier or micrometer to measure both chains?

    Bike and Electric Motor Kit

I agree with the dude. Probably because I'm out in the country side, the law seems to be largely an irrelevance. It's still the law, its just unlikely that I'll be caught, especially on a technicality like a 350w sticker where it should say 250w None the less, I stay in sensible limits. 20mph...

    What lights do you use

In the past I have built my own, using domestic LED spot lights, and plastic pipe fittings. As you rightly point out, things have moved on. My trusty WF-502b torch (10 usd from fasttech) with a single 18650 battery is plenty enough to fully light a dark Devon road. If I was doing it again, I'd...

    Fantasy Ebike

Ok, so let's say you had a mortally possible (let's say £5k) amount of funds for any ebike you wanted. You can buy it, build it, or have it built. You can use it on the road, or on your private estate, it's up to you. What would you do? How would you use it? How much would it cost and what...

What's wrong with this forum lately?

The quality of conversation on this forum has deteriorated significantly over last few months. It's really about the 'signal to noise' ratio for me. An increase in spam, trolling and nastiness, and a decrease in reasonable, sensible and informed discussion. I urge the moderators to consider...

    What name next?

I lived and worked in Sweden for a bit. The Swedes thought it very amusing that all our British trades were called fitters. The word 'Fitta' in Swedish means.......well it begins with 'C'. I will never forget seeing a Swedish colleague laughing his R's off, pointing at two blokes as they walked...

    Hub Gears

At 32% you need crampons and a team of Sherpas, not an E-bike. If you went with a Bafang BPM in the front you would have a really good hill climbing machine, and you could still have hub gears. The Whoosh Big Bear is a good examaple, I've always thought they should do a hub gear version.

    Hub Gears

I have hub gears on a couple of my electric bikes, but both are front hub motors. Personally speaking, and for simple on road/cruising/utility I find that combination is my favourite.
