There is a ridiculous idea gaining ground in the UK that we are somehow entitled to have money handed to us from the hardworking and successful people because they got too much.
It's not a ridiculous idea or confined to the UK, it has long been widely accepted as necessary. The reason it is necessary was the invention of money and the ownership that money can buy.

Before money, when our needs were more basic for such as food, shelter and warmth, the ratio of individual consumption was quite narrow. The man with lots of food couldn't eat hundreds or thousands of times as much food as a man with little food. He could only sleep under one roof, only sit before one fire. These were the natural order.

The invention of money has made possible, and indeed commonplace, obscene levels of possession far beyond any individual need. The power that gives inevitably results in greed and abuse of that power, impoverishing to varying degrees the majority without that power. At its worst it has historically led to the lifespans of the rich being double those of the poor and even today there are large discrepancies of lifespan between rich and poor areas, due simply to poverty.

Left unchecked such inequality can eventually lead to such as the rule of the Romanovs in Russia and the violent correction that resulted, only to lead to the equal extremes of Stalin and Nicolae Ceaușescu. But all that can be avoided simply by correcting the distortion of the natural order that money introduced, levelling out the amounts and power that individuals can acquire.

Truly mature societies like those in Scandinavia learnt long ago the evils of power, Norway, Sweden and Denmark all at war with each other and each at times in the ascendant and ruling over the others. With that experience they've learnt a better way, not seeking power individually or collectively, but each country and individual instead being willing to share what they have for the overall good.

That is not communism, it's socialism.

Another airport carpark goes up in smoke. What's changed that is making this happen now? I don't remember airport fires like that before the recent spate of them.

This guy explains about EV fires in carparks. It gets you thinking.

cars are parked too close to one another.
I don't think which fuel the first car has is a big factor. Battery technology has matured a lot in the last few years, they are a lot safer than petrol cars.

Can 'Degrowth' Save the World?

A group of academics and activists are questioning the possibility of endless economic growth on a finite planet and calling for a bold solution: degrowth.

UK set to sizzle in intense five-day heatwave as temperatures reach 30C

The latest hot weather maps show a huge increase in temperatures across the UK
According to that map, Telford's only going to be 24 deg. I'll have to go in the garden and light a couple of bonfires, and while they're burning, I'll drive my diesel van up and down the motorway to try to encourage a bit of global warming so we get 30 deg like everybody else. Can anybody recommend any other actions I can do to get the temperature up? I really would like to see 30 deg here in Telford.

25 degrees in Telford! The map has my area showing only 19. How long will it take to ride my BBS01 conversion from here to your area?

If you want to feel warmer, just put a coat on. That's what we do up here.

It would be easier if we let global warming do its thing for a bit. That gives the added advantage of reducing your heating bill in winter. If the government stopped all their stuff to prevent global warming, the temperature would rise, then they wouldn't need to waste money giving it to us pensioners for winter heating allowance. So, you and me get to enjoy warm summers and the government saves money, and we wouldn't have to pay such high taxes. That's a win, win, win.

That's a very rascally opinion for this forum! :)

By the way - the new government's first move was to cancel pensioners heating allowances, so they already saved that money. Personally, I always thought that benefit should be means tested. Makes no sense to be handing rich people money just because of their age.

On another subject - I just had my French niece on a visit and we took both electric bikes out on a nice ride to Gilsland and had a burger and coffee. The little Argos bike gave a good account of itself riding the hills and tracks. She really enjoyed it and said she wanted to go again. Unfortunately some sort of worn out hurricane is just arriving with rain and high winds and anyway - the Argos bike 8.5Ahr battery has just done 15 miles and about a thousand feet of climbing, so another ride would mean a lot of pedalling and wet weather gear.

That bike was such a bargain. I like it.

Farage earns more than £1m a year for non-MP work

I don't like Farage - But what is wrong with that?

Nobody is forced to pay him. He has something to say that people for whatever reason, are prepared to pay for.

If you were interesting Lenny - people might pay you. Go for it, instead of complaining that other people get money.

If you post the same things that he says on TV, Starmer's prosecutors may read your posts. If he says it on GBNews then it's political debates. Some may think that they pay him to say things than you and I can't say.
