I have ordered a higher tog duvet.

Adding a cheap 99p space blanket layer inside the duvet cover, transforms a duvet's heat insulation. But does make it much more flammable.

If you tighten the sleeping bag drawstring under your armpits, you can still play games. Otherwise inhabit the bag.

heat just bleeds out, once I turn the heating off our place goes down to 17 degs in 10 mins

I spend most of my time in the living room, and the windows there get cold wind blasted- very thick curtains weren't enough, but once I added Ikea thermal blackout blinds, it now maintains 21C for ages after the heating has been turned off. I installed them so they roll down a bit proud of the curtains, down to a couple of inches above the floor.

Suspended ceiling panels are safer, supposed to be fire retardant, but a standard suspended ceiling could leave @PC2017 stooping around his home, if his ceilings are already low - perhaps the more fire retardant heat insulating suspended ceiling panels, could be screwed directly to the ceilings? Or maybe he could install suspended ceilings with smaller heat insulating air gaps? Onto 2x2 inch wood perhaps? I suspect he's probably losing much more heat via the windows: Until I fitted very thick curtains, and thermal roller blinds over my windows, foan around doors and draught excluders under them, heat would be pushed through and out of my home by strong winds (also breezes).

It's a pity laminate floor underlay is flammble, cheap insulation for ceilings otherwise? A few layers and painted?

One guy locally on the nextdoor forum was moaning about his monthly bill being £600, god knows what they are using sounds like they are trying to heat a barn up.

Is he paying it forward, backwards, or is he being screwed sideways? When I eat at a restaurant in the summer, it's nice that I don't pay in advance for food I might eat in winter.

Som folks have no rational on how to economise or be thrifty.

You'd be amazed how often people who use food banks, continue to order expensive takeaway meals.

Two people one netflix HD £11ish a month for us, I watch and enjoy every day & i cancelled my TV license which was a waste of money imo YT for news now. Mobile phone £30 per year, old S6 1p mobile if anyone's interested, no landline & fibre 32mbps £23 a month, I do have a cheeky screwdriver every night. Quit smoking 10 year ago.

A hotel in Moscow we stayed at in 1984 had double glazing panels with a 2 inch gap between glass panes. Triple glazed. Minus double digits outside but warm hotel - for some reason the water was yellow. So yellow it stained the ceramic sinks etc. Must have been yellow for years.

That explains all the vomting on the (propeller driven) Aeroflop Aeroflot plane afterwards - people were erupting every few minutes, vomit dribbling down the aisle and side to side as the plane violently rocked about... or it could have been the very suspicious looking "Chicken cocktail" in wineglasses (pronounced "Ticken"). Teeny tiny bits of chicken in a pink ooze. Served with a slice of gone off lemon. Everything was served with a slice of old lemon, even the tea. I drank a lot of black tea, ate nothing for the entire 36 hour flight.

But very impressive triple glazing. The Moscow airport ceiling also impressed - loads of huge (copper?) metal rings of various lengths pointed down. Soldiers with rifles, big furry hats and long dark green wool coats were everywhere. Also the view flying over the Himalayas at dawn was awesome, but bloody cold.

I'm having to waterproof my padded cycling leather jacket again - wax doesn't melt and soak in, unless I keep my home very hot for a day or two; applying three or so layers. Hence 24 degrees centigrade, which is now easy to maintain after getting my home insulated. 27C is also easy (but unbearable). Deffo get your home insulated! More cold snaps, must surely be on the way?
