New batterries arrived yesterdaY :) Two 3s 5000mah Zippys.

Both came charged at 3.85v and balanced to within 10mv (4mv on the second) so did a quick charge to 4.16v and let them rest for a few hours. Still both within 10mv balance so looks like good packs (a few discharge cycles will confirm).

Made a parallel harness for them and filed the battery box so I have two "outputs" on the outside of the box - one for the 44.4v 10ah pack and one for the new 11.1v 10ah pack. Series connector then connects these two and feeds into the controller. Happey to say the batteries fit in the box perfectly - so that's now a 55.5v 10Ah lipo pack plus 7.4v 6Ah pack for the bike lights - nice and neat (photo coming soon). I then plugged the laptop into the controller and lowered the amp limit to 12a which should give around 725watts peak on the motor.

So, how does a 55.5v pack (63v fully charged) perform on a Tongxin? Brilliantly :) Into the promenade headwind this morning with me pedalling I was cruising at around 22/23mph. With the wind to the side the speed eased up to 25mph so that's bang on where I expected it to be. My 9.2mile commute dropped from 30 mins to 24 mins with an avg speed of 23mph (I love only having one set of traffic lights on my commute :) ). Used 4.1Ah and 235 watts so that 25.5wh/mile and it showed 730 watts peak on the meter. Excellent - as the wind will be beind me on the way home the amp/watt usage will be less so I'm still on course to meet my 80% pack usage per commute target (obviously adding the 11.v 10AH pack added another 110w/h energy to the overall pack).

Very happy - must just remember to pedal any time I see a copper and make sure I don't run anyone over who walks out of thier garden path ;)

Any bets how much longer the motor is going to last? It has 800 miles on it now - confirming what I thought at the beginning - it isn't volts that kills Tongxins - it's amps and pulling away from a standstill (and associated clutch slip).

Indeed it will be the torque stall that destroys the gears. Doubt its getting that hot from 700 ish watts.
Good install and get some pictures up when you can.
Some good data there though. Looks like the motor must have been drawing that peak for quite a alot of time in order to get that amount of watt per mile.

25watt per mile is quite some usuage. The head wind must have been hitting you pretty hard. I pull less than that on the bpm doing similar speeds @ 44v 22-23amp draw.

Yeah, the headwind was quite strong this morning - Blackpool does get some pretty high winds - no hills but plenty of wind - my reason for going electric assist in the first place :)

Regards heat - I felt the hub as soon as I pulled up at work and it was only slighly warm. A bit hard to see the watt meter when travelling but it was pulling a shade over 450watts @ 23mph into the head wind.

My Tongxin has done over 8,000 miles. Coming up to 1,000 in my latest "stokemonkey" config ...

That's really encouraging :)

What were/are your amp/watt limits? I assume you've treated it gently by not using it from a standstill and avoiding clutch slip?

I did have a bit of a panic on the way in this morning. Just after I throttled up after a junction and approaching max speed I was greeted with a regular, loud, metallic knocking noise that got louder and louder. I was about to switch off until I noticed I was riding past a house that was having some scaffolding put up and the noise was the workmen knocking the joints onto the metal poles

I had a similar scare with some squeaking and it turned out to be tweeting birds. I thought my chain wheel was about to snap again!...
I do treat it with consideration but there have a been a few times when I've been in the wrong gear with a low cadence and everything has been straining but now I've got my onboard rpm computer those days are over :)
amp/watt limits? ...
AMPS: I'm using 2 Cytronex NIMH bottle batteries which are 4/4.5 ah. 36 volt. I keep a log of all my commutes which includes the charging times which have been varying from as little as 52 mins up to 90 mins. - I think thats all I can tell you about AMPS!
WATTS: Motor is rated to 180w .. umm .. and I think thats all I can tell you about WATTS! ..
If I can get more info for you then I'd be happy to learn some new formula or consider getting some new monitoring equipment ...

Hehe - no problem with not know the watts/amps your motor is pulling - it's all controlled by the controller, not the motor.

I have one of these HobbyKing R/C Hobby Store : Turnigy 130A Watt Meter and Power Analyzer between the battery and controller that logs the max current drawn and peak watts etc.

Just did the commute home - 23 mins but this time only 160wh used and 2.9Ah so that's 17.4wh/mile :)

18.4mile round trip commute avg speed of 23.5mph and 7Ah used :) I can live with that ;)

Quick update - with the nice weather the miles are really racking up - just passed 2000 miles this morning.

Only part replaced on the bike is the cheap pedals - the bearings wore really quickly and the cages kept throwing screws resulting ina horrible creaking noise - upgraded to some nice Onza VP 458's in black :)
