"Hundreds of people have signed up for the chance to own an electric bike as part of a project to change the way people travel in and around Shrewsbury.

The Shrewsbury Moves eBike subscription scheme was launched by the Shrewsbury Big Town Plan Partnership, providing the opportunity to rent a bike at a heavily subsidised cost – and more than 450 people have applied.

The response has been so great that an initial 120 eBikes are now being introduced, rather than the original plan of 100."

That's not a bad scheme. The bikes are pretty good standard Chines bikes, and it works out at around £250 for the first year. I wonder who has to pay for servicing and wear and tear, or if it gets nicked?

Culloden Moor Inverness
"Inverness e-bike scheme suspended with most bikes out of action following "obscene amount" of vandalism"

By November they are up and running again. I wonder who paid the damage bill and will it happen again!

Not much to do in Inverness when the H runs out, Cardiff more surprised by given it's a big cultural city, they've had a few schemes here and for sure I've seen more than a couple of them in the canal and basin behind the mighty Firhill but mostly they are left alone.

A FOI might tell you how much public money was invested then written off.

Government plans to give more power to Mayor of London to regulate e-bikes and e-scooters
However, there are concerns about how ‘efficient’ Transport for London will be - given the delayed plans to regulate pedicabs in the capital

"According to Cllr Hug, Westminster has the most e-bike journeys in the world with over 2,800 bikes per hour peddling around its streets per hour at peak times. There have also been 630,000 bike trips around Westminster every month over the last six months while 360 parking bays have been installed by the council."

If those headline usage figures are correct (I would question how the data was arrived at), it's no wonder London fire brigade reports so many bike fires. Where I live it'd be a struggle to see 2,800 journeys a year. (Perhaps a slight exageration) So, as mentioned earlier, it's a matter of percentages and degree of abuse. There are NO delivery riders around here, oh and no fires reported. I wonder if the two could be connected?
As to charging. I have 3 batteries in the collection.
!. An Ezee rack battery (around 14Ah) re-celled by Jimmy (r.i.p.) a few years back. It has always had a high quality fan cooled 4A charger. The connector is what I would call an XLR plug. The 3pin type you get on microphone cables.
2. A soft pack (14Ah) built by Jimmy. 2A charger with XLR plug.
When charging I use the fan output to blow over the 2A charger to help cool it 'cos it gets hot.
3. A rack battery on the wife's Big Bear (14Ah ish) also recelled by Jimmy a few years ago. This has a very slow charger rated at 2A which also gets hot and has the barrel type plug. I suspect it's lower than 2A though because it's the slowest of the lot.
Chargers get hot, batteries don't, not that I've ever found anyway.
If I were to advocate for a type of charger plug it would be the XLR type. Both plug and socket are robust construction and can only be put in one way round. There are different pin configurations that could be used for different voltages so they couldn't be mis-connected. If moulded on plugs were used then it would become obvious if some numpty had changed the plug and charged with the wrong voltage.

The GLC monitor routes doing physical vehicle counts, but a high proportion of th e-bikes they see in Westminster will be those of the three e-bike hire companies, Lime being the largest of them. Those e-bikes are in use all the time for quite short journeys.

Sinces the users are not doing the charging, that being done by the e-hire company equipment, they wont have any of the fires.

The guilty ones who cause the fires are the fast food delivery crowd who modify or lash up their own e-bikes.

In my part of the too hilly London fringe, all our fast food deliveries are made using ic mopeds, so like you we have no e-bike fires.

Are you sure about that? What's this cruising past the police without pedaling then at 14:16?
Croydon The Final Part

Here at 0:32 and at 1:46 and 11:40 and 47:00 and 48:40. Not one pedaling, and the police don't care.
