Indeed, it's most commonly military establishments and all "other ranks" take part in these guard duties. It can get serious too, a friend of mine in my army years was shot in the stomach guarding a very mundane army unit. That was by the IRA hoping to get access into the armoury for weapons.

As Ross said, we don't do much dirty work down here. We even import people to pick veg and fruit for us. I'm surprised Kent didn't bring in foreign miners to dig the coal out, they now bring in Eastern Europeans to pick hops, though most of our hops we import now from Eastern Europe. Many online sellers do almost exactly that. They take your order, and put the package in the "to go" (or "to be picked up") pile and tick the "Sent" box.
A tiny bit annoying at times but if done without malice and simply as a convenince, fair enough.
I would be at all surprised if simply putting the address label onto the test package could be counted as "sent".
