I dont see any issue with that. If we are capable of paying surely there is a moral case to do so. Could that work alongside some folk having totally free, others paying a decent contribution and others financing through insurance.
Around 5 years ago I was offered a replacement knee on NHS, felt it would curtail a few of the sports I try and take part in. Looked into stem cell, unavailable on NHS so went private. Self funded. Cost a fortune but worth it. Yes, I, ll need a new joint eventually but stem cell treatment has bought me (so far) another 3 years abusing my knees, hopefully another 5??? We, ll see.
Cost a fortune says it all

Before 2008, the NHS was about OK-ish. Now it's in a dire need of money.
most of us pay in more than take out, it's to be expected that we want better efficiency but think about it, the answer is not more tax cuts or promises of reform, the answer is everyone who can afford private healthcare should either think about paying privately or move to another country to reduce the pressure on the NHS.
or stop being an International service as per the BMA

seriously, in the next few years, NHS patients may have to be mean tested for expensive treatments, ie you pay 20% of the cost of your hospitalisation or expensive medicine if you have x amount of savings.
That will raise additional resources and encourage health insurance and private health care providers.
On the face of it that sounds ok. But:

Take three similar families, A & B are of similar income, similar circumstances and similar opportunity. Family A are a bull-**** type family living well beyond their means, Range Rover Evoke on lease, Disneyland every year on the credit card, Fake Designer clothes from matalan on a store card, handbags they don't need or can't afford. Family B are more prudent, only replace the car when needed, go on camping holidays etc. Family B save a bit of money which they intend to use to travel to the places they missed out on in earlier life, and will buy a nice car as a treat during retirement. Family C are struggling. MrC does his best, works 40 hours per week but only earns enough to cover the rent. They have no car and never go on holiday.

Unfortunately MrA, Mr B and MrC are diagnosed with serious illnesses in their 50s, both requiring hideously expensive treatment and drug therapy. Mr A has no money, in fact he's heavily in debt because he's spunked all his money away and shite he didn't need, but wanted to look flashy, so he can't afford the treatment. MrB, the twat, has got a pot of money sat in the bank because the ass-hole has lived within his means. MrC still hasn't got anything.

MrB weeps as woosh and Jeremy Corbyn rape him and steal his dreams and the things he missed out on in earlier life. They empty his bank account to make him pay for getting ill. Meanwhile, woos and Jeremy Corby reward MrA's recklessness by picking up the tab for his medical care.

Woosh and Jeremy Corby also pick up MrC's medical bills.

Fair? MrC undoubtably fair and absolutely no question about it.

What do we do about MrA and MrB? Well if MrB has to pay, then personally, I wouldn't be too bothered if MrA had to face up to and confront the consequences of his financial recklessness and if that meant no treatment, then it means no treatment. Maybe a few heartbreaking stories might get the message across to these idiots. MrB, well yes, if he has saved the money, then it looks like he will need to pay Woosh and Jeremy to stay alive.

What about MrD , the inflatable air bed captain who has just landed his craft at Dover. He's travelled from Africa and he's poorly and needs expensive medical treatment. He's come to the UK because he's heard that you can get fixed up for free.

We already have a contributary health service in dentistry and opthalmology where NHS patients pay, but not the whole cost.

Perhaps one way is that everyone not on pension credit pays a small amount towards whatever NHS treatment they have.

The BBC have chosen pension credit as the defining line for free TV licences from next year, so we have a precedent.
.
Then NHS will need more admin and managers to work out billing, along with office buidings - all probably subbed out to private companies that in turn will want to make a profit - so that that all needs adding to the bill.

If any of you have pets and have experience of their bills then it might be cheaper to put the elderly down sooner rather than later...

Well it works for dentistry and opthalmology so there's already a system in place. Indeed there's also an in house system in place for charging overseas patients, so I think it could be done.

And how does someone with Prostate cancer and unable to work, perhaps on a zero hours contract, so no income, going to pay 20%?
that's what means test is for. Some people can afford to go private and jump queue, some have to wait but pay a fraction of the cost, the poor have to wait but get the treatment for free.
it works OK in France where most people take out "assurance complémentaire santé" (aka Mutuelle).

if we were going to implement such a system, health tourism becomes fully paying except on compassionate or emergency grounds.

there will always be cases where some people take advantage of the system one way or another. You can't just leave the poor and needy die because you assume that they let themselves fall into that situation.

Yes dentists and opticians have it but not hospitals (ok pharmacies do) Only overseas patients I ever saw were some Americans on a cruise that stopped over at Harwich that needed A&E but I think they were patched up and sent on their way for gratis as it was the weekend and office bods only worked Mon-Fri 9-5. The dept that deals with that is tiny compared to one that would need to be set up to deal with means testing and billing paperwork of every hospital patient. So you'd need more ward clerks, computers, computer systems, IT bods, admin staff, debt recovery

Maybe all hospital bills should be added up accumulated over lifetime and paid at death with interest - might mean no house/ nor inhertitance for relatives - but can't imagine any party getting elected on such a policy and its deeply unpopular when such a system is currently used for care home provision for elderly.

Nope. Not going to happen.

You’d best find another Tory fantasy to **** to. Tax breaks to the highest earners should get you there. And its possibly going to happen with your hero Boris.

Mr A, B, C and D will get treated if they are ill. They can choose how they spend their life free of idiots like you deciding if they do it to your standards.

And Matalan don’t sell fake designer clothes. Think about that sentence. Why would a high street shop sell fake designer clothes?

You really are living breathing example of a Tory scum bag. Luckily you will never see your plans come close to fruition as the majority of people in this country are not like you.

Maybe put a chip in at birth too?

You lot on here are a Tory wet dream.

Age has aged you.

I know, but TypeA families are not a minority, they are prevalent and growing in number. They have the means, but are reckless with money. I just think it is totally unacceptable to punish someone of similar income in the cruelest way imaginable, for the crime of being responsible citizens.

Low income earners who can’t afford to pay for treatment, of course theirs must be funded.

Unfortunately I am Class B. , But class A is the person who actually gets the economy to grow. Saving money is a nonsense. things only happen when the Money circulates..
It is much better if the Class A person actually spends his money on productive things,..like getting a farmer to plant a few trees ,which later become oak planks than buying the new OLED TV , but even just getting the farmer to dig holes generates economic activity. ..or so the Keynesian economics school would advise.

Good point. I suppose Mr A does create growth and consequently an investment return on Mr Bs investments.

Mr T just says, “I pity the fool” which does nothing for the economy. (You May not have seen The A Team TV show during the 1980s).
