I was surprised to see disposable masks being handed out at stations (can't remember now which European country) last night on the news.

I'd have thought the rational approach would be re-usable masks such as some of the cotton ones? Partner has made several. Especially if it can be confirmed that ten seconds of ironing with a steam iron is sufficient to disinfect (adequately for one-person use, at least). I doubt they are less effective in real world use than some of the bottom-end disposable ones.
I suggest putting those cotton ones in a plastic bag..or a pyrex bowl with lid and 4 minutes in the microwave ... Marinated with a tablespoon of water. That steam will sterilise anything...

Maybe that is better than steam ironing? Maybe not? Certainly I don't know but it is sometimes tiny things like informing us which techniques are sensible, and which are not, that could make a disproportionately large difference.

In 4 weeks, the ONS would have published the figure for last week and I wouldn't be surprised if the COVID number exceeds those who die of other causes.
thats because every one now dies from cv19 on the death cert all other causes of death has now been cured cant have it both ways pmsl.

the dwp kill 20.000 a month fact and this is going to sky rocket with mass unemployment and over time this will be the one that kills the most.

just wait till they start mass sanctions as thats there job at the end of the day the dwp death toll will sky rocket as a result of dwp actions.

even if 50 000 ppl dies of cv19 is it really worth destroying the economy for no! as this will kill even more in the long run.

can you live on dust and rain water :D

While the Barclays hide away... This was published 08/04/2020:
PM’s newspaper accused of ‘sick joke’ over free deal to NHS staff

Boris Johnson’s old pals at the Telegraph have been widely mocked, after the right-wing paper offered a free subscription to NHS staff…shortly after a star columnist caused outrage for denigrating the service.

The paper – which until recently paid Johnson £250,000 a year for a column – was derided on social media over the deal. Last Thursday the paper published a piece by Charles Moore – Margaret Thatcher’s biographer – titled: “The inflexibility of our lumbering NHS is why the country has had to shut down,” a point that seemingly ignored the fact that nearly every country is experiencing a shut down.

The piece asked: “Why are we clapping the NHS?”, slamming the government’s slogan of ‘protect the NHS, save lives’. “Children are made to recite it like a prayer,” the right-wing columnist wrote.

An Irish citizen has been questioned and bank funds have been frozen in an international investigation into a multi-million euro coronavirus mask scam.

The alleged scam began after a German company tried to buy 10m masks, valued at about €15m (£13m), from online suppliers.

The German buyer unwittingly placed an online order on a fake Dutch website.

Fraudsters put the buyer in touch with an Irish "intermediary", police say.

The German firm then made a down payment of €1.5m into an Irish company’s bank account, based in County Roscommon, for masks that were not delivered.

Fully agreed.

Utter rubbish, they have face masks and where possible the front entry is closed and only middle entry used with front seats of lower deck not used to leave the driver in a large space of his own. There is nothing else that can be done in a bus where large numbers are carried in a single space with a single air con system, other than shut down the bus service.

And it was the Tories who introduced single crewed buses with drivers interfacing with passengers instead of being in their own separate cab, for money reasons of course, as ever with the Tories.

Sadiq Khan is a good mayor doing everything possible in a crowded city with double the national rate of Covid-19, hence that bus driver rate. He's infinitely better than his Tory predecessor, Boris Johnson.
.
It’s not what I’m hearing from TFL bus drivers. I think 19 are dead so far.

Meanwhile the Barclay brothers have such faith and belief in the Tories they have gone AWOL. Deserted Tory Britain.

The Zoe woman journalist who wrote that crap is clearly demonstrating that she is available for anything, if the money is right.

  • 4,760 claimants died between the DWP referring their case to, and it returning from, an assessment provider.
  • 73,800 claimants died within 6 months of registering their claim.
  • 17,070 claimants died after registering but prior to the DWP making a decision on their claim.
The total number of PIP claimants who died topped 95,000. But Newton’s response does not indicate at what stage of their claim the 73,800 people who died within six months of it being registered were at.

I know what I'm seeing, as close as the bus stand 60 metres from me. The bus drivers aren't a reliable source since some are getting a bit hysterical because they are understandably very scared.

But they don't have an answer either, it's either accepting the limited things that can be done or shutting down the bus service which carries the NHS staff to work .

To put things into perspective, London now has over 9,000 buses with mostly 18 to 24 hour services, so probably a total of over 20,000 drivers working shifts for the various bus companies.

The infection problem is very much a more central route one where densities are high with lots of bus travel. In the outer areas like mine Sadiq has also slashed the service frequencies to minimise the number of bus journeys, but as you've observed yourself previously, that can't be done when there's many passengers packing in.

You can't have it both ways in busy areas, minimised service frequency with half empty buses.
.

I think the MHRA are putting a huge amount of effort into validating them and verifying they are suitable. I suspect they are grossly under-staffed in this area as the speed and number of devices being assessed are greater than usual.

Not a good start Boris!
More deaths (16,387) in England and Wales in the week ending on April 3 were reported than any week since records began 15 years ago, the Office for National Statistics reports today. That's 6,000 more than the 5 year average for the same week.

I wonder whether you would have bothered to post this if the fraud was perpetrated by a citizen of Northern Ireland?
Anyone care to give odds on that happening?
