It's the EU that's managed to keep the lid on fascism for more than 60 years !, and without a united Europe it will attempt to rise yet again.
It was Michael Heseltine who once said ' Do the think for one moment the British people would be stupid enough to vote to leave the European Union and have Germany as the all powerful force in Europe ? ' guess they are then.
Beware, a warning from history.

No it didn't,who sold you that?
Their national governments. Just as here in the UK, they make the EU the whipping boy for all the things their populations don't like. Everything that's wrong, blame the EU. We have a microcosm of that in here with Zlatan, who blames the EU for everything wrong, despite most of the things he complains of only being under national and not EU control.

Hold on a minute - the EU didn’t start until 1993. We have the EU now and fascism seems to be rising pretty rapidly as far as I can see, so is your argument valid?

Oh its nice to be popular..
How on earth is EU responsible for keeping a lid on fascism. Thats barmy. Facism was defeated in 1945 and countries sort of learned their lessons. Hanging fascists fron lamp posts was not brainchild of EU.
The EU policies have helped create the atmosphere and conditions to promote extreme right wing. No more, no less.
As for me blaming EU for all thats wrong, thats wrong. I see them as useless offering great advice, advisory policies and ignoring them themselves, costing a fortune in mean time and trying to establish itself as a layer of government totally unnecessary and superfluous.
EU should not have progressed beyond EEC. Its a trading block, not a political identity,yet...but its trying. Very.

pure semantics.
rules and fees changed with Maastricht treaty, same golf club.

fascism seems to be rising as you said but I suspect it has more to do with large American owned internet platforms with rules of the jungle and under the guise of free speech. If what you read and see on the net can be properly moderated by laws of the land (eg fake news treated as slander), the rise of fascism would not have been so fast.

The hold on Fascism has been due to all stages of the unity, from the Coal and Steel Federation formed after WW2, through the Economic Community (Common Market) to the present day steps towards EU federalisation.

The two political extremes and especially Fascism bring war, and Europe has had more than enough of that following the two world wars. So long as the nations hold together, there will be no internal wars.

The far right is a busted flush, they never get more than a third of the vote in any country and most of that is more protest vote than actually liking. That's why once the protest has been registered, their support vanishes. We saw it here with UKIP, a sudden surge in support due to the protest against the main parties, then the support for UKIP vanished as quickly as it had appeared.

Not bad, you managed to be wrong consistently. and the end of fascism didn't come till 20 November 1975 when Franco died,

Oh thats right, it only took EU 2 years after our joining EEC. Funny how you are so pedantic over my posts but others make stupid claims, like EU defeated Fascism, and thats fine.
EU had absolutely nothing to do with demise of fascism. And BTW Fascism was defeated in 1945,just not wiped out, but neither was it in 1975.

Before ranting you should check your facts. Contrary to popular belief Franco was not Fascist. (It was Francoist, and supported by Fascist governments originaly)

But OG says he was a Fascist..(It does sound like Francoist I suppose)

Notice how Spain is conspicuous in its absence.
Notice how they nearly all stop in 1945...
Who is wrong OG. Your apologies will be accepted gracefully.
EU destroyed Fascism before it (the EU) was even thought about and as far away as Brazil. That is a trully remarkable achievement.
Why do folk make such rubbish up about the merits of EU. Brainwashed or what.

No it didn't, and neither did 1945. Fascism has always existed, long before the word was created, and it still exists now. What the EU in all its stages of evolution has done in Europe is restrain its development and limit its return.

The commencement of unification after WW2 was an openly declared reaction to the horrors of two world wars and an expression of determination that we must never return to that state.

As long as the nations of Europe remain joined, we never will, since people are reminded by the EU's existence why we set up the co-operation in the first place.

Perfect it's not, but it's far more perfect than anything than went before in Europe.

I know flecc. I was being ironic.. You have taken comment out of context, and you know it.
The nations in Europe can obviously remain united without the EU. People should not credit outcomes to EU which are credit to Europe. There is a massive difference.
And why didnt you correct the original poster claiming EU had defeated Fascism.???

Somebody on this list has taken a comment out of context?!!

Whatever next?

Soon we will have people accusing others of failing to base their opinions only upon the facts of the matter and focussing solely on evidence that supports their own positions.

Two thousand years of history shows you are spectacularly wrong. The nations of Europe alone have never been able to unite, until the post WW2 unification project was started.

And why didnt you correct the original poster claiming EU had defeated Fascism.???
I didn't see it at the time, I've been out most of the day as is often the case. I'm not in here all the time, far from it. I just quickly dip in when passing to post my perspicacious gems.

Anyway I was supporting you, since you didn't believe the EU had defeated fascism either.
