Like old tom I am fully embracing this feeling of superiority which has been besstowed upon me through my ability to copy and paste quotes from literary greats.

I am now leaving the house on a mission to find a person wearing overalls so that I can spit on them. Then I shall order a glass of wine in a foreign tongue. Finally, I beg that old tom allow me to touch his cloak, for then I will be healed of my racism.

You could of course if it's raining put your own overalls on and spit on yourself, but some how that smacks of faking it, and in any case your natural talent for comic retorts needs no Genetically mucking about with.

And remember at this very moment unknown (but obviously large numbers of your loyal fans) are cutting and pasting your very own words of wisdom.
As your most senior fan, I claim the honour of cutting and pasting more of them than anyone else.
Stay the tillson we know and admire, "warts and all"
"fully embracing this feeling of superiority which has been besstowed upon me "
You see? I can't help it!
Regards
OG

me too, way back when, read the allegory before about English conquering the world with interest. It's not as phonetic as say Spanish, or French, and so can cause more dyslexia. Perhaps as with brexit, be careful for what you wish for.

Nothing is perfect and everything has disadvantages, but the sheer scale of the advantages of a world with a single common language overwhelm such minor disadvantages.

perhaps, growing up in an ex colony has left me with a different perception, it can equally feel like hegemony. Happily, as this forum and brexit illustrates, the chances of that degree of collaboration ever actually happening is very slim

True, though developments in today's world ensure ongoing creep towards ever wider understanding and use of English.

Over the years I've watched with amusement the desperate attempts of the French to limit the inroads of English, but "le weekend" persists! :)

You're just jealous because you don't have the equivalent of the Academy Française defending the English language. ;)

My thought is that the English language is well on the way to no longer existing in a couple of generations. What will be called English then will have nothing to do with the language I was taught at school.

Some interesting statistics on immigration here
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-37183733

Rather puzzling is the lack of any detail on people coming from Syria and other African areas.
Is it a case of their numbers are unknown, I wonder?
Not the mix I was expecting to see, for instance there are more Irish an German immigrants than I thought there would be.
And there are less Muslims in the mix too.
Quite interesting figures.

No, in typically British fashion we amateurs carry out that function. It's what David Cameron called "The Big Society".

Is there a line for those alighting from a curtain sider on the A1?

Indeed not, one can only wonder how many there are, but surely those that pass into police custody should get recorded?

Yes, those that pass through the police custody system will be recorded, but of course we don't know how many don't and disappear into the population.

Are you are insinuating that the French aren't doing their job and stopping them from getting into the trucks? Or that the truck drivers scared silly by the fines and the risk of being sacked aren't controlling their trucks? When I look at the state of Calais there are quite a few that aren't going anywhere and many (most?) have been living there for well over a year.

How about just for 24 hours we look the other way then you would know how many are being stopped for sure.

The best way into an island is by boat. A quiet beach. £500 a head paid in cash to a needy fisherman...

Tillson, illegal immigrants are the result of insufficient resource to control our borders. Why should it be the reason to leave the EU?

The official population of the Camp in Calais as of July is 7,300. Let's say that is off by 100% so less than 15,000 people fleeing war, famine god only knows what.

I'm saying that an unknown number of people are entering the country illegally aboard lorys.
