Just listening, admittedly rather half-awake, to a program about partition of India. Could be salutary to be reminded of the effects of that secession both at the time and thereafter.

Of course, that partition was different in so many ways. Nonetheless, we should be so extremely careful to avoid political expediency resulting in bad outcomes.

Shades of the Pirates Code methinks..
"Careful?
What has careful to do with it?
It's more of a guideline really,
We're all Brexiteers now
Aint we?"

if you know what I mean :(

Let us hope that TM (or any PM of the day) somehow doesn't get to hear of this USA proposal:

In future disasters, US citizens may receive messages on their phones directly from Donald Trump, as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) begins its testing of a system that allows the president to send a message to most US mobile phones.

(Despite that coming from the live feed about the Carolinas storm in the Guardian, which paper some have severely criticised, I am so glad I didn't have to resort to the Times for a quote today.)

Mind, UK ones might at least be in reasonably proper English and typed and spelled correctly.

Which is what they are hoping to exploit of course
the article carefully avoided making the accusation directly.
Dog whistle politics comes to mind.

What a wonderful opportunity and the ultimate challenge for a schoolkid hacker.
This idea is utterly fraught with stupidity.
Emergency Messages should not be from any individual.

apparently, leave side would like to make the comparison between brexit and the situation that NZ found itself in when the UK joined the Common Market. The UK took something like 40% of NZ's exports until then. After the event, NZ was forced to find new openings elsewhere and it found new markets in Australia, China and other Asian countries. It eventually did better than before.

Let us imagine, with due horror, that there is a CREEP (apt in this case). As we approach the presidential election, DT's horrible hands would be reaching out to his mobile to send such tweets with an uncontrollable action reminiscent of Dr Strangleove's arm.

It is a truly appalling idea.

NZ has ever after felt shabbily treated - and understandably so. That event will never be forgotten in the relationship between UK and NZ.

"Eventually" is a dangerous word, things can go very badly wrong in the interim period

it does not fit in with the 'sovereignty' argument though.
some people take comfort in believing that the EU is a leaky boat.

They did better because they had the food (chiefly lamb*) to sell and a huge rapidly expanding Chinese market for that food.

We don't have any remotely comparable equivalence.

* At the time NZ had five sheep for every human!
