What size frame did you try out? I'd say 6' 6" is pretty tall and warrants the largest frame, but it depends on leg length as much as anything.

I am very impressed with my Ortler Wien 7-speed. It has a Bosch drive and would just about do your 30-mile round trip, given your weight and fitness. There's an ongoing review thread I update from time to time

The HP Spirit is a good introduction into recumbents. I had one a few years ago. It is, however, very heavy and powering it would make it more so.
