    Cube Kathmandu Hybrid Pro 500

The Cube is still going strong. I've ordered some Schwalbe Marathon GT365s to fit onto it. Those will handle bridleways better than the Marathon Plusses on it at the moment. One minor irritation is that the front forks aren't as giving as the Ortler's. That means that my very loud Lion bell...

Case studies - how has your electric bike changed your life?

I swapped jobs in 2015 to one 9 undulating miles away from home. I used to be only 4 miles away. It's a pretty physical job, so I didn't relish the thought of riding in under my own steam and then having to do the return journey knackered at the end of the day. I considered a moped/scooter, but...

Bosch Battery Service Centre Recommendations - mail order?

My Powerpack 300 is not working. I took it off a bike whilst it was switched on and that seems to have blown a fuse. It was fully charged and shows no lights when checking the battery level. I took it to my local Bosch bike shop. Basically they weren't much help and told me what I'd told them...

    Cube Kathmandu Hybrid Pro 500

I've done my commute this week on very quiet roads. That means I have been able to unleash the power of the bike in Sport mode. It would be silly of me to say how fast I went, but it was very rapid indeed, and far too fast for normal traffic. The bike handled it with aplomb and the brakes are...

The Negative (IMHO) Trend Towards Built-in Pannier Racks

Well, I'm aware what I could do, but my point is that the manufacturers shouldn't be making that necessary, should they? These 'racks' are a triumph of style over substance and fail to stop normal-sized panniers flopping around at the back, with the risk of the back of the bag going into the...

The Negative (IMHO) Trend Towards Built-in Pannier Racks

Exactly, the lower picture is a Tortec Expedition rack, and very well designed it is too. It has arms that extend well back, meaning that panniers get the support they won't get from the Cube's. I also suspect it is somewhat lighter than the thick aluminium tubing stuck on the back of the Cube...

The Negative (IMHO) Trend Towards Built-in Pannier Racks

I've used a lot of after-market pannier racks in my time and the makers, such as Tortec, have now refined their designs to match the needs of many cyclists and their luggage. I've just bought a Cube Kathmandu Pro 2018 model. It's a superb machine and I'm finding it difficult to point out any...

    Woosh or Raleigh?

My e-bike journey so far has been varied. I started with a Woosh Sirocco CDL that I bought, almost as new, from eBay. Sorry to say that it basically fell apart under me*. Next I moved on to converting a couple of bikes I already had in my collection with FWD systems. Neither of these were...

Dead Bosch Powerpack 300 - Help!

My Ortler has been fantastic, as has the Powerpack battery & Active Line motor. I've upgraded so I'm selling the Ortler & had a potential buyer here. I was showing him how to remove the battery, but I removed it while it was switched on. The battery is now dead. It was fully charged, so that's...

    Cube Kathmandu Hybrid Pro 500

I did the commute this morning with the bike in Tour mode. I actually have to put in some effort then. In Sport/eMTB mode, I only need to turn the pedals. c.9 miles at an average speed of 17.5MPH with just over 1 bar (of5) of battery used. I like!

    Cube Kathmandu Hybrid Pro 500

Today the sun is shining here in Warwick, or it was. So, I hopped on the bike, with Badass dongle fitted, and went out into the local countryside. I soon encountered the tail end of the Warwick Half Marathon, which was actually quite good, as the roads were closed. I also caught the tail end of...

    Advice sought for new eBike

The Ortler is a very good commuter. It's hub-geared, so no derailleur to worry about and has a simple twist-grip gear change. It even has 3 brakes! The gearing ratio is easily tweaked by changing rear sprockets that cost £3 and maybe a new chain costing £5. If I had one less positive thing to...

    Advice sought for new eBike

Definitely go for a mid-drive machine would be my advice. I've had front-hub-driven, rear-hub-driven and mid-driven bikes, and the latter is by far the best. I can't speak for other makes, but the Bosch system on the two bikes I currently have is excellent. A Badass dongle will allow you to...
