    Worlds first self charging e-bike

The thing is, this monster weighs 28kg!! Whatever the added weight of the additional battery charging gear is there are two much better design philosophies. One is simply use it for more battery. The other is to reduce weight (the Orbea Gain philosophy) so you need to use less battery assist...

    New Model Halfords Carrera Vengeance

Sub £1500 Woosh (or similar British manufacturers) are good value. They use Chinese motors to build good value bikes which tend to be more reliable and better thought out than than the budget ebikes sold by the large chains. Once you get into the price range of the Bosch crank drive motors -...

    Worlds first self charging e-bike

To be fair, they're not selling a perpetual motion machine, it's just that they are "pedalling" a system that is much inferior to just using the extra weight for a bigger battery or ditching it for a lighter bike. Either would give them better range. But it's the 28 kg 7 speed 'mountain bike'...

    Worlds first self charging e-bike

Seems all over the place to me. 28kg? Without pannier-rack, lights, mudguards etc? 5kg heavier than the fully loaded Cube Touring bikes (and they are pretty heavy). OK so how does it recharge? We know that regenerative breaking isn't worth the weight. Can they use the motor in reverse as a...

Tried 4 ebikes recently - Van Moof, Haibike, Lime e bike, Uber e bike - only liked one

I have actually seen a couple of Crossfuses used for this (as I commute through Manchester City centre most days it isn't raining) but Bosch motors are quite rare as they are premium products and Deliveroo/Uber Eats drivers are usually pretty skint - or they wouldn't be Deliveroo riders. I've...

E-Zee Riders - The UK’s first Land’s End to John O’Groats electric bike holiday specialists....

I'd agree. 85 miles a day for 10 days (in all weathers as well) is really pushing it unless you are already relatively fit. Perhaps one or more of the coast to coast routes on ebikes would be a better option? A lot more people would find it do-able as well. And it would take maybe 3-4 days...

Tried 4 ebikes recently - Van Moof, Haibike, Lime e bike, Uber e bike - only liked one

"Also don't think I buy the idea that an ebike cannot be fast and zippy" It's true that, for short range city commutes on good tarmac, a cheaper chinese hub bike is often a decent tool for the job. Hub motors will hit full power delivery faster than crank drives and feel 'zippier'. They...

how much would petrol need to increase to change driving habits

To an extent I agree with you. Despite having a two car household and free parking at work if I want it, I have used public transport and bikes to get into work for 30 years and I still voted against the congestion charge when they asked. It was badly thought out in Manchester and too far out...

how much would petrol need to increase to change driving habits

There is a tram system, I go through the Didsbury Parrswood interchange on the way. My biggest gripes with the tram system are that it doesn't run a bike lane alongside it (huge opportunity missed IMHO) and bans dogs and bikes even off peak. People just have to get over the idea that there is...

Very confused - Looking for an electric bike

You won't need a more powerful motor for a few extra mph on the flat. The 250W rated ones actually put out far more than 250W at peak. And weight doesn't matter much unless you are lifting the bike up stairs or over obstacles or trying to get over the assist limit under your own power. Yes...

Very confused - Looking for an electric bike

US bikes are often classed as electric mopeds here in the UK. The Wing bikes look good value but the review I've seen says "With just one rotation of the pedals, the e-bike’s battery-powered 350-watt motor kicks in and I zip up the bridge’s incline at a steady 20 mph." UK and European max for...

how much would petrol need to increase to change driving habits

I happen to commute in to city centre Manchester from the suburbs (and have since 1989) and almost never drive in. First 16 years I took the bus from Levenshulme (occasionally the train) and the last 13 I have taken the train from Stockport (and since March have connuted in on fine days -...

how much would petrol need to increase to change driving habits

It won't happen until city and town centres and the routes into them prioritise pedestrians and cyclists (and trams and buses)over cars. Planners should first ask - how do cyclists get in from the suburbs to the city centre without having to mix with road traffic? And if the changes which need...

    Bosch battery readouts.

I wouldn't say that. The Bosch ALP is a great system overall. Obvious it's priced as a premium system but at least I'm confient the battery won't expode when I'm charging it. I've done 1000 miles using it in the last 5 months and it's been brilliant. And the range is great. I just find it odd...

Case studies - how has your electric bike changed your life?

The squeaky front brake is likely oil contamination in the pads. Just replace them and you'll likely be sorted. I had that issue and my LBS fixed it for £10.

Case studies - how has your electric bike changed your life?

That does sound annoying but £2k for 7 years use isn't actually too bad in the scheme of things. Less than a pound a day after all...how many miles did you do on it?

    Bosch battery readouts.

But the second issue makes the first one worse Basically I have a 40km commute. With the battery full and on Tour it uses one bar + 8km. The next day sees me down to 3 bars/nearly two. But on the third day, with the battery at the bottom of its 3 bar reading there's a good chance it will run out...

Was this a mispost? It's a new thread about exactly this issue !?

    Bosch battery readouts.

The one thing I find most frustrating about the Bosch system is the battery remaining charge readouts on their controllers and the battery itself. First of all I don't understand why it simply cant be expressed as a %, as every smartphone battery has been for years, for example. 20% chunks...

Bosch Active Line Plus vs Bosch Performance Line CX

I think it's about what gear you are in. ALP has no issues with hill starts in a low gear, but in a high gear can be sluggish both uphill and on flat (as you say, presumably to protect the chain).
