Assuming e-bikes don't end up regulated (which would change everything and kill off the grey imports and DIY end of the market) then I predict battery technology will be the main driver which enables this industry to grow. At present, batteries are still way too expensive and heavy...the...

Nah. Scroll back. There's been several other comments, maybe you missed them. And I dare say, there's probably a lot more people who can see the logic and common sense in what Flud and I are saying, but are just a little too timid to speak up. And I can see why. I'm not too timid though and I...

I'm not sure I follow your line of reasoning. What would you prefer them to be called them, instead of "off-road bikes"?

Sorry :( I just the wrong end of the stick there the way I read it came across as a put down. I'm just feeling a bit tetchy from some of the insults and remarks people have been making. I agree it's much nicer to try and get along and be friends. I was hoping to come back and see the nice...

You might take that view, but will the authorities and the families of anyone involved in a fatal accident? I'm not so sure. If I might offer my opinion..dealing with traders one by one and trying to moderate a forum of this size is going to difficult and seems a not very practical way of...

You have an advertiser, "Electric Bike Conversions" offering illegal 500W and 1000W bikes advertising on your site with some very dubious and some might say outright illegal advertising on their own site. Ironically the advert appears on your page about the law too...

Helen, with respect, I wouldn't be so sure on that and I would get some legal advice on this from your solicitors. If you're advertising and allowing 1000W kits to be sold which are clearly illegal, and you know them to be illegal, and you're also providing a forum where people can advise...

Firstly, I don't have to explain myself to you or anyone on this forum. And it's none of your business what e-bike I ride, but it's actually in my signature which e-bikes I have if you read it. Secondly, just the fact it says 1000W as Flud said, shouts ILLEGAL.

Interesting post Eddie. I wasn't aware we had an off-road category! That's odd how the site forum operator decided to remove it and merge that category into the general electric bicycle category. I wonder if that was for commercial reasons?

It does seem that way to me, exactly that way Flud. I've been away from the site since 2014. I return, and we have this very confrontational set of people here who weren't here before, who are all dismissive and even openly defiant of the law, While astonishingly others who are extremely...

Wrong on both counts. Now you're just trolling. a 1000W motor on any bicycle automatically becomes illegal. It's never road legal, on public roads unless you put it through vehicle type registration and all the rest. My kit is 250W and is fully compliant with current UK law.

I don't think I know more than I do. I know what I've seen and I'm merely providing the facts to support what I say is a likely outcome. We have seen it happen to other industries, why you people think the e-bike is somehow untouchable, is beyond me. Even a longstanding e-bike business and...

I explained already above, why it was necessary to show the bigger picture and not just focus on the e-bike context. We're discussing whether it's likely the government will eventually regulate the e-bike market. To make an assessment on whether that is likely, we have to consider the political...

I admit I strayed waaay off topic there, but I was trying to illustrate that far from a relaxed, laid back and tolerant country, the UK is becoming ever more tightly regulated, controlled and a "police-state" government mentality has progressively set in over the last 2-3 decades..to the point...

I see your point... we definitely do not want to alienate or do finger waving at non-legal e-bike owners on this forum. That's not the intention and I think Flud agrees there? Like flecc said, we're not trying to police the forum or create divisions and friction with people. The best answer to...

Yes, absolutely, off-road means private land and maybe public areas where you have access to off-road land but where there's no people regularly gathered there, such as farm fields and remote hills etc. Off-road bikes definitely can be used in may places legally, for example... On holiday...

Hear hear. This is precisely the thing that needs shunting off, out of the main general pedelecs discussion forum and into a dedicated off-road e-bikes category. It's creating very murky waters else and confusing the legality issue. As you say, sends out a misleading message that doing this...

That's very useful to know about EN15194 certificate. See I've been riding and building e-bikes for 6 years now, and I had no idea it was that simple! I had no idea the BEBA experienced that resistance or had a good practice charter. Damn. Although Cyclecharge was a member, we were only an...
