Am I looking for something that doesn’t exist?

Nope Nope. don't buy a cheap crank-drive with hub gears the motor is too crude to allow easy gearchanges. Either learn how to set off like hundreds of thousands of cyclists do or buy either a rear hub motor with derailleur gears or a front hub motor and hub gears.

    Orbea Gain sizing

I'm 5' 8" and the small Orbea Gain I tried recently was exactly the right size for me, so I'd say medium is correct for you .

Shimano Steps E8000 - Pedal Resistance

I've had one ride on a Steps bike, although I think it was the E6001 version, it felt the same as my Bosch Classic in that you could ride above 16 mph but was hard going, a combination of hub gears, hybrid tyres and poor aero, slight motor drag and the weight of the bike. Try before buying...

New bike, motor towed up steep hill.

Just like a normal bicycle then, I like bikes that are true to normal cycling but with a bit of assistance.

New bike, motor towed up steep hill.

Nice one, shortly before I got my bike I had a job to walk a couple of hundred yards due to illness, last week I rode that Dent station climb and think I did ok considering, it was raining at that point and I ascended into the clouds, so missed the lovely views too.

    Chain wear?

Of course not, chains are set up so they don't lock up in the extreme big to big and that wasn't fitted by a bike shop remember.

    Chain wear?

All bike shops do that. obviously you won't be going to any.

    Chain wear?

Bike shops have chains on rolls, so it is unlikely they ever actually count the links, just set them up big ring to largest sprocket on the rear.

    Bosch battery readouts.

But he's only talking about the battery gauge, NOT the range feature doh.

    Bosch battery readouts.

I see no mention of the displays estimated range in your post, so SW's post is off at a tangent as they often are.

    Bosch battery readouts.

I never ever use the range feature, but the battery indicator looks just the job. https://cdn.shoplightspeed.com/shops/608251/files/12404927/800x700x2/bosch-kiox-display-2019.jpg

    Bosch battery readouts.

I just want to say I feel a whole lot better about the range on my 6 year old Bosch classic, was having range envy for the briefest of moments.

    Bosch battery readouts.

Yes but that's the difference between eco and turbo, nothing to do with the thrust of this thread.

    Bosch active line plus thoughts

The other thing e-bikes do is get you to 16 mph when in a lot of cases you'd be nowhere near that speed on the type of bike you're on, so when you're without motor assistance you're experiencing the reality of that speed and the effort it requires, it just feels slightly odd.

First ebike: Cube Touring Hybrid One/Hybrid or Reaction Hybrid One or something else?

Sorry range reports then, I wasn't trying to imply your range reports were inaccurate. Again I am simply trying to make anyone reading aware that how you use your bike is at the opposite end of the scale to say how I would use it. I haven't questioned the way you use your bike in the way you...
