Tyre width has narrow can you go?

Downhill at 60+ km/h with short braking distance at bottom - my choice is made, braking distance is also much shorter with balloon tyres! I can keep up with or downhill faster on Number Two than many roadies I meet because of the extra confidence I have in road holding in corners and braking...

When riding on the footpath should I.....

Another couple of km of shared path are about to go into service in the coming days here. I will use them during the tourist season because it is a section where trafic is at a standstill most of the day. On the other hand out of season I will use the road going south because I am not far off...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Why would there be so much violence and poverty in Central America? Could it be because of actions of their neighbour to the north? Could that neighbour have put in place corrupt regimes that play by it's rules? Yes I think fleeing poverty and violence is justification to say "honey grab the...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Maybe because the energy density in a LiPo pouch is much higher? Mine are 10 Ah so probably 4 x the energy and are capable of 150 Amps in bursts. I have over 3000 km of safe LiPo riding and others here have much more, LiPo users tend to be careful with their battery. This is what happens if...

    2018 ORBEA GAIN

I have bee using 10 Ah LiPo in parallel with a very tired 10.4 Ah bottle battery, it acts like a 20 Ah battery (no sag). I charge my LiPo to 41.5v and the bottle battery will not charge much higher these days so there is no issue with current rush. You on-board battery will wear out before your...

    2018 ORBEA GAIN

Both batteries have to be charged to the same voltage - tolerance of about 0.2v difference in charge seems to be OK. So the best bet is to connect your batteries in parallel hot off the charger with both at 42v before starting out on your ride. EDIT: chris beat me to it...

Giant bikes. Opinions on these two?

The Yamaha (SyncDrive) Giant with a double chainring will climb anything no matter how many stones you chuck at it. Tyres, brakes and suspension would be my concerns before worrying about the power of the motor. I haven't fully tested the GSM at lowest gear (32:40) because I haven't found one...

Review: NX Eagle - SRAM's New Affordable 12-Speed Drivetrain

Exactly the same manufacturing process is used to make 10 speed and 11 speed chains and an almost identical amount of steel. Can someone explain the 12€ price difference between the two other than marketing mumbo-jumbo?

    Cycling "worth" more than steel?

Funny thing is the other day in San Sebastian I saw the exact same toolkit I got as a present when I was five or so. Must be a re-edition of classic toys or something, so any way a real saw that you can cut your fingers badly with etc. etc.. Those toys, recovered wood from the wood heap behind...

[Jun 15, 2018] The Sun Trip 2018 (Lyon, France)

A couple of years ago there was a young guy who set out in a vélomobile with e-assistance. Unfortunately for him he blogged about it being unrestricted and how he was going to thrash all the other contestants. He was chucked out. Ah youth! In another life it is something I would be keen on doing.

Can you software limit a bafang motor to 250w to make it road legal?

I corrected my big mistake (mixing AC with DC - ouch!) in previous post, sorry flecc, 62v nominative is outside the Low Voltage Directive which is probably why you can find those on the market. They charge to 71.4v peak which should in theory give a top speed of about 60 km/h (loaded) with a...

Can you software limit a bafang motor to 250w to make it road legal?

Continuous power is a customer guarantee and the motor has been tested (in theory) by the manufacturer to comply to the number stamped on the motor. So yes you are correct, only in lab conditions as set out in EN 15194. You should be able to run your 750 W Bafang for 2 hours at full Amps...
