If it were me, I'd go with the 44T. BBSxx's are happiest when the motor is spinning fast, so the 44T will put the least stress on the internals. The 44T will still get you to 30mph with an 11T cog on the cassette and 26" wheel. If you find that the stock Bafang chainring gives you chainline...

You can reprogram the BBSxx series of controllers. Unless already tweaked for performance, they usually come factory set for eco usage. A programming cable can unlock extra torque and speed.

I think you'll end up getting an over voltage error on the display. What are you after, more torque, more speed or both?

I think the valves just screw in, so if it wasn't tight in the first place, vibration could have caused it to loosen.

In the wet, I tend to change my braking style, from predominantly front braking to rear. I'd rather the bike fish tailed, than completely let go at the front. Yeah, MP's can induce twitchy starfish syndrome in the wet :eek:

Heat shrink is great on areas that suffer from flexing or chafing, but I learnt the hard way, that it's not particularly good at waterproofing connections or cables. My battery dock cable is soldered directly to the controller power cable, protected, or so I thought, by a piece of heat shrink...

Interestingly, I used to go to Glyn school, mentioned in the comments, which implemented these rules earlier in the year. Used to cycle there nearly every day, with not a peep of an issue with road safety, or negative impact on the environment. Admittedly that was early 80's though :D

I currently have a 42T Bling Ring on a BBS02 and the offset is about 5mm towards the bottom bracket. I previously had an Alcedo Italia 42T chainring, which had around the same offset. I cannot run a regular Bafang chainring with my 8 speed cassette, as it renders the two lowest gears unusable...
