it's all about amps not watts when matching controllers and batteries. You can only fit a higher power controller if your battery is able to supply the max. amp rating of it. If your controller has died, it's got nothing to do with your battery, unless some kind of short curcuit has occured...

You are pretty much on the limit of your BMS cut off limit then. It's always worth having a little buffer below the max. limit of components. Some battery builders/sellers fit various BMS's to the same pack, so your pack maybe able to supply more, but pushing the cells too hard will shorten...
