Warranty is good only in shop where you buy the bike

I am just so glad I am now in the Mercedes Smart family with the huge back up and network they have for their eBikes.
Your judgement may be premature, they don't have a huge backup network for e-bikes. The current support may only exist while the e-bike is current. I mentioned earlier the e-bike they marketed some while ago, but when they discontinued e-bikes they gave no further support either here or in the USA.

UK owners have had to rely on this forum since 2006 and be prepared to lash up replacements to keep them going. For that reason their second-hand prices were rock bottom.

It's questionable whether they even made your bike, the earlier one they sold and pretended they made was in fact designed and manufactured by Austrian motorcycle manufacturer EMC-Puch.

The bike is made in conjunction with a small company called Grace, it was designed with influence by Kalle Nicolai. It's a shame there are a few people on this forum who are so bitter and negative arses, no wonder the industry is a mess. I have 2yr warranty with mine and by the end of that it will have more than paid for itself, that was all in my risk assessment of buying it compared to buying one in the UK from a wide boy with a pop up shop!

It's clear you have absolutely no idea what you are taking about in relation to the current Mercedes Smart eBike that is being sold and has been for 3yrs, as such I suggest you either research it and learn or not post such utter twaddle.

I was already fully aware of the Grace and Kalle Nicolai involvements years before you even bought one of these bikes, which is why I questioned it's heritage in my previous post. As an ex-trade person who has knowledge of power assisted bikes dating from 1950 to the present you are hardly in a position to call utter twaddle the facts that I've posted.

Judging from your ill-informed arrogance, it seems to be you who has much to learn, not least of all some manners.

Don't try back peddling now you will just dig yourself a bigger hole, it was very clear you had absolutely no clue what you were on about, especially with this quote "It's questionable whether they even made your bike".

I think it is clear for everyone to see where the arrogance is, well unfortunately for you I have no time for arrogant people and can spot them a mile off. I suggest you do even more research and you will answer your own question in the quote above.

Out of respect for the forum which does have a lot of helpful people that do know what they are talking about, I won't be commenting on your Smart eBike drivel any more. I am sure you do have knowledge in certain areas, but a little advice, stick to what you know and have 'real' experience of, you will be respected more!

Guys....a little civiliality (if there's such a word)....goes a long way. Remember a written note can often be misinterpreted as its not the same as a spoken conversation.

So -- politely -- stop this bleeding "my dogs bigger than yours" posts. It detracts away from the subject. This thread was about warranties and on that subject I've learnt a lot.

Bottom line, for my next bike, if a manufacturer won't stand behind their products then I'm not interested in them. I agree my contract if purchase is with the supplying dealer BUT the manufacturers also have legal contractual EU wide obligations.

Smart Arse, it seems you get your kicks from being thoroughly obnoxious whilst most folk on here get their kicks from helping other folk.
I think you need to find somewhere else to troll.

If that was aimed at me....then I don't see any point in my staying in this forum. Thank you

Crockers, you can be assured that it wasn't aimed at you. :)

I can only comment on two companies in respect of warranty.

BH which were atrocious and left me for months without a bike, and KTM who have been nothing but helpful. This includes just walking in off the street for diagnostic help to a random dealer, who even offered to send the bike off to a second branch, as they didn't have the required equipment.
With KTM, there is the added bonus that the distributer FLI, use both this forum and support a FB page, so any concerns can be acted upon quickly.
Woosh, Kudos and Cyclezee also spring to mind in respect of being pro active, as does Martin in respect of Haibike. Being pro active offers it's own peace of mind, and obviously makes good business sense.

I think it was probably aimed at Smart eBiker who seems to be possibly the rudest, nastiest and most arrogant poster I've certainly ever come across on a forum.

He seems to think that because he has a "designer" bike, it makes him and his knowledge far superior to everyone else!

Smart eBiker, you're a twat who has no place amongst decent people......

Flame on!

There he goes again... This guy has ‘issues’ in the jargon of those over the pond. I’ve seen some strange people turn up on forums in my time but this bloke takes the cake.

I had a Grace bike, can't speak of the Mercedes but the Grace people left much to be desired.

I'm guessing that the guys at Mercedes gave him a new bike in double quick time because they wanted him out of the showroom pronto.

Also, I have a feeling they have hundreds of unsold units in a warehouse somewhere, hence the massive 'discount'.

At £1200 it's still expensive for a 420Wh direct drive bike with a real world range of 25 miles. (Apparently 67 miles is claimed, as quoted by our new friend.)

Yep. Mercedes seem to have cocked this up royally. Selling bikes with 200W motors, small batteries, and with what seems like old technology is not very Smart.

I think there is a basic misunderstanding here and on other threads with the assumption that new bicycle sales networks and new car sales networks work the same. They don't. Get over it. If you are happy buying an ebike from an automotive chain great. After all there is a huge muti billion dollar industry backing you up. Unfortunately the bicycle industry is not that big. Nowhere near.

Buying from an automotive dealer certainly limits your choice. Most ebike shops offer a wide range of models from multiple manufacturers. Apples and oranges you might say. Bottom line, the choice is with the buyer.

Finally, just because you bought a bike from Mercedes does not make you an expert on all thing ebike. Very knowledgable people with years of experience have given input to this thread only to be basically called liars by someone with just one bike and having done a "risk assement". It is a shame that the original intent of this thread had to be derailed in this manner.

the problem I see is that the Smart e-bike has quite a lot of custom parts. That means difficult to fix after the warranty runs out. Smart Ebiker said earlier that his first bike was DOA. Apparently the box was not PDI'ed before he collected or left in storage too long, he got a new model the following day. That is both a good and bad sign, depends on how you look at it.

Listen, my knowledge is limited to the Smart eBike, I have no experience of other eBike manufacturers and have never claimed to. The only reason I bought the Smart eBike was that it did what I wanted and had a 2 yr warranty, I am not racing the bike I am using it it for rehabilitation, it is a beautiful machine that is slightly different from a standard bike and a pleasure to use.

What I don't like is the know it all clowns with no experience of the Smart eBike coming out with clap trap, I don't know why, but it's dangerous as some people believe anything that is posted. Now less of the bitchiness and slagging off other people's choice of bike, there is something out there for everyone and everyone has a different want, need and budget.

To all the bullies who think they are the dogs dongles, sorry but you have been outed and shown your true colours. Just reading some of the posts on here makes that very clear. I'm off for a cycle and will leave the keyboard bitches to it, perhaps they will take time to reflect on their attitude and start being more civil, respecting fellow members and their choice of cycle, and sticking to what they know.

Maybe Mercedes were abiding by the law at the time unlike other manufacturers, as for the battery I think you will find it is superb, I take it you have a Smart eBike as you type your experienced comments!! Anyway as for size it's very large, err..about 14" x 4" x 5" :)

The bike although designed in mtb form is very unappealing to me and should have been made as 700c style bike as it definitely isn't an off road bike, it is a town/ road use bike for the Joneses. I'm sure that if a few of us on this forum took it off road proper it would go back to the dealers often.
