BA complains to BBC about Panorama e-bike misrepresentation
The Bicycle Association has sent a formal complaint to the BBC about recent coverage of e-bikes and illegal e-motorbikes on the Panorama programme. Now updated with BBC response.

Where are the Anti Dumping duties now? ;-)it's due for review next year.
At the moment, there is no import duty on Chinese BEVs.
I am truly tempted to import one for personal use.
It will be good if we could get the Chinese to set up BEV production here.
The EU put 17.5% to 35% on Chinese EVs depending on manufacturers. If BYD come here, they will have to bring their battery production line as well to satisfy rules of origin.Where are the Anti Dumping duties now? ;-)
Which clearly they do selling same motors marked as 250W or 750W just contact them to 'discuss' your 'requirements' and 'branding'.Nothing to stop a manufacturer rating a 1,000kW motor as 250W in the current arrangements.
The frequent discussion is because people have paradigms in their heads about how power regulations could be in an alternative world that prevent them from seeing reality. No, I'm not wanting to make rules, and as I said earlier my view, quite strongly influenced by the extensive discussion in this very thread, is that I am not really bothered about actual power output PROVIDED those EAPCs modified or built with peak output power capability way beyond 250W are strictly limited to 25km/h assisted speed.
We cannot expect to have both lax interpretation of what 250W is supposed to mean, and blithely exceed 25km/h without the sort of reactions that non-EAPC riders express.
My interest in the test, and it is a while since I read it in detail, is that it does not establish the maximum continuous power CAPABILITY of a motor, and the flexible approach to RATING any motor at all as 250W according to the test is another guaranteed friction area with anyone who is not the EAPC side of the fence.
Specifically, my logical mind has trouble with rating a motor that would pass the test if tested at say 350 or even 500W at 250W just because it hasn't been tested at higher powers.
That may not be clearly enough explained, but best I can manage after a long day on a roof!
You get a cardboard box, punch a few holes in it for air, open the top and place it in the middle of the floor. Within seconds, pussy climbs in. Shut the lid and pussy is now ready for the vet.I cant even get a 4 kilo kitty into a carry box for a vet visit (just booster shots).. had to cancel 2 x appts due to failure and cat hiding from me as a result. - current strategy is a bowl of food in the basket, got the weekend to acclimatise her..
Correct. That's the law. It's actually very easy. You can do the throttle speeds with a KT controller. One other thing though, which they don't seem too bothered about. The bike or motor should have a label with the manufacturer's name, the power rating and max speed written on it.Which clearly they do selling same motors marked as 250W or 750W just contact them to 'discuss' your 'requirements' and 'branding'.
So essentially all you need to do to become 'legal' is have pedals, configure controller to 4mph max throttle assist, restrict top assistance speed to 15.5mph and have a hub that was 'rated' by the 'factory' stating it's 250W...?
Nuts..
Actually 21 years, during which time almost all the EU and other countries with this law have expressed no problems. Its almost exclusively a British problem, due entirely to the mess the DfT made of introducing it contrary to the accompanying instructions. They allow a wide range of motors that can suit everybody's needs. They've stood for 8 years or more
sorry for the side-track, -Yeah the cat is Very timid (4yr old shelter rescue just over a year ago), does not react well to handling and prefers hiding under furniture and digging into clothing, than inside boxes, - not really a problem i leave her alone and she comes looking for a fuss when the whim takes her,, too often sometimes .. but as soon as i show any sign of picking her up the claws dig in deep if picked up i have about 3 seconds before she turns into a real life expression of a looney-tunes Tasmanian devil. You get a cardboard box, punch a few holes in it for air, open the top and place it in the middle of the floor. Within seconds, pussy climbs in. Shut the lid and pussy is now ready for the vet.
A better way requires some forethought. From the beginning, you put a furry blanket in the cat carrier and leave it with the door open facing out the window or patio door. In the winter, one of those electric blankets for cats will help a lot. It will become pussy's favourite places to chill and sleep. Pussy will then not associate that device with going to the vet, so will be happy to enter at any time. At the moment, pussy knows that the only time it sees that device is when it's going to the vet, so it'll avoid it like the plague.
When a gas engineer saw my cats, he said "I didn't know it was legal to keep panthers". Had to reassure him they were just domestic cats. Half Siamese but for some reason jet black. I don't know what the other half was. I miss them a lot. I'd upload photos but I can't bear to look at them, even though they died a few years ago. I'd end up thinking about them again.I say 4 kg, she was 4kg last yr everyone tells me she is bigger but i dont see it?? dont think she will get to 13kg, thats HUGE!.
