Look at places like California and Australia. Do they want to build gas fired and nuclear power stations? The answer is clearly not. They currently add batteries at the rate of knots to deal with known situation like that. Saneagle recently told us that his solar kit only lasted 2 days when the weather is against it. In the very near future, the UK would allow V2G (vehicle to grid) to solve that problem.

Shocking news! The UK is not the same as California and Australia. Key stage 2 geography course required.

I have no problem at all with installing cost effective carbon free generation as long as it is cost effective and doesn't drive our industry into bankruptcy. I am delighted to see the days when wind farms are generating 20 Gwatts of power. I look up at least once a day how they are doing. It is great when they can step in and do the job, as long as the price is right and we do not lose all our heavy industry to China through utter stupidity like shutting down our ability to make virgin steel - which you ought to know is the ONLY source of high quality specialist steels needed in many industries. You can't make jet engines out of scrap steel. You ought to know that because you have suggested you have an engineering background (though I can't marry that with some of the ideas you put forward.

It is ESSENTIAL that we ensure solid supply. You keep on talking about batteries, but do not engage with the fact that the sheer quantity of capacity lost during the last fortnight's locked in high pressure system, would require impossible amounts of battery capacity.

In the last fortnight we were forced to generate 50.6% of all of our power by gas. That amounts to half our 30Gwatt average consumption - so 15 Gwatts. Calculate the number of hours in a fortnight - 336 hours. Now multiply that by the gas contribution - 15Gwatts and we would need battery capacity of 5 Twhrs of battery capacity to get us through the last two weeks....

Ah - Ok - they are scifi, speculative concepts at the moment like much of Miliband's plan. Never mind. Outlaw the use of gas and invent some wonder product that no body can actually make to take the load of half of the UK grid for a fortnight.

In the future, I speculate that this period will be taught in schools when children are learning about how the Uk was taken back to the Dark Ages by mad leaders - a bit like how people learn about Chairman Mao and Pol Pot taking their countries into abject disaster, or Stalin's plans to collectivise farming which brought mass starvation.

CATL made those batteries only for OEMs at the moment. Just google CATL solid state batteries.
I got that news from Sam Evans YT channel. Basically, CATL have about 1000 staff working on these batteries for some time. They expect putting them in EVs in about 3-5 years. Until then, we have NCM (Lithium-ion) + silicon batteries. You get about 350WH/kg with NCM.
We live in an era of rapid science advancements. New information comes out all the time for solid state batteries. I keep following the news.
