They wanted Crimea for three good reasons:

1) Historically it had always been Russian territory, occupied by the Russian Tartar people for hundreds of years. The USSR awarding it to the Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic was a silly mistake, assuming the USSR would last for ever:

2) It had long been the base of the Southern Russian fleet, vital since theirNorthern fleet regularly gets iced in,

3) The Ukrainians had no use for Crimea and still don't have. They rely on farming and mining, but Crimea is a riverless desert useless for agriculture, and with no mineral deposits. Their wanting Crimea now is classic "Dog in the Manger", "we've got no use for it but we'll make sure no-one else benefits."

I know, but as I explained, Putin has no problem with them slowly becoming de facto Chinese again. The joint plan he and Jingpin have is very long term, reaching far beyond their own lifetimes. The only way that can change is if Putin is planning to double cross Jingpin, but I doubt he'd be that big a fool to try.

I thought Crimea was a gift to Ukraine by Kruchev during one of his lighter moods. The Ukrainians mostly used it as a holiday resort during the soviet times.
Therefore the re-possession of Crimea in 2014 did not surprise me so much. However the invasion of the rest of Ukraine was wrong and there can be no justification for that.
I sincerely hope that our current leaders in both sides would tread carefully and make sound decisions to stop this war which is not going to lead anywhere but massive losses and human suffering on both sides as well as the rest of the world.

Tibet is not a country. It is an autonomous region of China, a bit like Northern Ireland.
There are lots of autonomous regions in China. It's not a case of land grab but the tibetans are forced to learn to read and write Chinese among other things.

Remember I posted two days before the war started** what his real objective was, complete with photos of the southern area he would aim for, not Kiev. That attack in the north from Belarus was a dummy, pleased to take Kiev if at all possible but not bothered if not since he already had Crimea loaded for the attack from the south for his real objective, taking the whole of the Azov and Black Sea coast to cripple Ukraine economically.
