Oh dear, that's not good - £20 per week will barely cover hot water, add debts to that mix, my heart bleeds
He's in his 70s, retired three years ago. Was busy working, paid by direct debit and for some reason thought he was in credit, but it turned out he was in quite massive debt. He may have paid much of it back by now. I hardly ever bump into him, but he's the neighbour I see most often because he's always trotting around the corner to see his daughter. He's hardly ever in his own home, has a good support network with rather a lot of family members living nearby. I think that people who pay via token meters, pay higher unit rates, debt or no.

Gas and electricity prices are rapidly increasing, I can recommend installing solar panels https://www.propaneva.com/best-off-grid-solar-system/ They come out 33% cheaper.
I installed this on our RV in the rainy Pacific North West. Easy installation. Ever since we disconnected from the piedestall and have only used solar power. I did not expect to be able to do that here in Oregon. But our batteries get fully charges every day and during the day we discharge To 40 - 50%, BUT IN THE AFTERNOON WE REACH 100% again. It has been like that even on rainy days. We can run lights, fans, water pumps, tv, charging for PC, Phones, and Ipads. All this on a 400W solar system. I'm very positive surprised by this.

soared at peak hours to £2.60p per kwh
supply & demand man ain't it great... I have worked out that my [gas & elecy] cost next winter if I use my boiler and PC will be £480 per month disregarding [if] any Gov intervention; even top loading during the summer all the spare cash I have bar my puny savings pot I will reach £300 per month [just] - I really wanted a new PC(DDR4, m4, 6 core Ryzen]) out of my savings & enough for spares for the bike - I honestly said during lockdowns if I can save a few quid we will be heading for a massive bust in the very near future...

I've got to ask how you've worked that out, I think £480 a month is very high. My gas and electricty bill (actual, not estimated) was £160.78 last month. I've reduced the number of computers on at any one time, started using low power tablets for internet surfing and this:

...electric blankets instead of central heating, as much as possible.

6 core Ryzen
History will note them as "The 6 Core Ryzen Riots" of 2023

I used to be sceptical about nuclear power. This one (TMSR-LF1) seems better than most.

Wow , 160 & 480, you two must be using a lot of power gadgets. My last dual fuel bill was £88.
CH is on sometimes for 2 hrs morning and again the same in the later evening, during the day if too chily the open fire is lit with wood . The cargo bike /trailer is ideal for collecting fallen wood locally on the trails and from the woods, I have a toe path along the railway that backs on to the garden and the council have copiced aload of hazel etc, and left it laid it down on the banks of the water way that takes alot of excess rain away. I simply have to go along with a battery saw and large loppers to cut it up for carting away.
When the open fire is not in use , the flue is block by a PIR insert I made to be 100% draught proof.

With this snow I have noticed alot properties around me not very well insulated in the loft as they have only half of the snow on them mine has , some of the converted loft house have little or only 20% of snow covering comapared to mine.
Thye must be using alot of heat to keep warm whilst helping to melt the roof snow.
Having up to 500mm of inulation above my ceilings and in between the loft floor makes a big difference to heat loss, I didn't bother with gov't subsidies to do the work by a bunch of cowboy energy firms ripping off the tax payer but dif I did it myself.

Is that with the "HM Government Discount Energy Bills Support Scheme"? With the discount, my bill last month was £94.78

It's time I bought a measuring device.

I really should get a woodburner and knock a hole through the wall...

Yes inc the £67 gov't fuel payment , my D/D amount taken was £19 instead of the usual £99 to average the yearly payment out.

Yours maths don't add up guerney, one minute you say £160 then next it is £94 ?
If the latter then financialy you only paid £27 towards your bill.

I stated the higher figure initially because it reflects my energy usage, but £94 is after the very unusual £66 discount.

With you now , I read the £94 as including the fuel discount.

But electrcity is 49.12p/kWh!!!! And it may well be higher next winter?:eek::eek:

My home maintained a constant 21 degree temperature (due to elderly pets), 24 hours a day, from 2012 to 2021. This year I've made a huge effort to cut my usage, and the bills are still 25% higher than last winter.

Your kwh rate is a bit more then mine at 35.314p.

With hind sight I should have stayed with shell where I would have been only paying 20p a kwh until next July. At the time I before renewing for a new fixed rate , I opted to move to pureplanet on a better deal though they went to the wall six months later.

+ 45.24p/day electricity standing charge, which is outrageous. I'm sticking with Ebico for now, because I can quickly reduce my bills by using less. I foolishly ignored a price-lock deal.

I really do think energy costs could lead to social unrest. I'll do a spot of rioting later - it's good for where my soul used to be.

ooh lots to read, I'll put the lappy on for all that save a few pennies.

I know what I have spent for a day being on prepay, every day I make a note, at the same time of my remaining credit in pounds & pence, then work out the difference between the one day and the next, then collate an average price for BOTH gas and elecy.

Without the £66.00 - I use (T1D so regulating my body temp is tricky + cold flat) Gas £5.50 per day [heating off about 6-8 hours a day(24hrs) & elecy (dryer uses a lot) £6.00 per day.

The current cap is £2500 then a EBSS £400 so £2100 > next april £3000 that's 30% increase.

5.50+6+30% x31 days =£463 for the 4 WINTER months > Summer will be a bit cheaper, washing outside etc but still £280+ hopefully much less.

dryer uses a lot
Also a fire risk. Sell it. I dry till dry-ish on a rack in the kitchen, and finish off on the radiators.

T1D so regulating my body temp is tricky
I was pre-diabetic before I lost weight, still might be a bit, as I do still feel the cold... but a hot water bottle under my feet keeps me from worrying about my toes turning black and falling off, a duvet cover containing a duvet and space blanket keeps my legs and up to upper body warm, and an 45W electric blanket on the back of the office chair/armchair/sofa/bed and a woolly hat does the rest, until I must use a central heating blast or three. Merino wool thermal undergarments are the mutt's nuts. Like I said, I'm making an effort this year...
