I thought Ebikes were totally banned in New York?
I thought that too.

The officials in charge of New York City have had enough of e-bikes and are clamping down and intensifying enforcement on a law made back in 2004 that electric bikes are illegal in the entire state of New York. It was announced on April 12th on the city hall steps by city council member Jessica Lappin that the fine for riding an electric bike in New York has been increased from $500 to $1000. She said “My office has been deluged with complaints about the scourge of these souped up delivery bikes, which can hit speeds of 30 mph. In a recent survey, a whopping 72% of constituents said they’d “been hit or almost hit” by a delivery bike, and not surprisingly, about the same percentage favored increasing fines on electric bikes.” Most of the blame on the crackdown is being put on food delivery men who often time ride ebikes at reckless speeds. Also it has been announced that many electric bikes have been confiscated by the New York City Police Department.

I'm not sure about 2004 but I was there in January and believe me they were everywhere.

This is the place I got that snippet from

64 deaths in one year due to electric bikes in one city in China....The Yanks will believe anything.

Tbh I can see the reasoning now for the bikes to be limited in city centres. But again even though there were tons of them about they were going nowhere near 30mph.

Someone must think of the children!

The way Manhattan is designed though it's like the perfect course for a Gtech or any other small battery whizzer.

electric scooters are officially banned in New York, pedelecs are tolerated.

@Fingers I am all for more e-bikes, it's cheap transport for cities like London but I don't think that the market in London is about to 'explode' soon. The UK market for e-bikes remains stubbornly small. The vast majority of e-bikes are sold to the 60s+.

does your bike have 20T on the rear cog and 50T on the chainring?
watching the Gtech ad, it seems to me that the F/R ratio on the Gtech is a bit small for an electric city bike, making your legs flap a bit. It does look right if you ride unpowered though.

by the way, if you need a Gtech 5AH battery, it's £299 from their website.

for the moment, you'd better take the battery with you when leaving your bike in the streets of London, Gtech seem to be out of stock of spare batteries.

My feet do flap a bit.

Trex. Out of everyone here you seem to have a handle on this.

In regard to the spare battery's it seems there is a locking problem. It still exits but they sent me a new one out 5 days ago.

Literally no problem. They dealt with me excellently.

I like the style of the Gtech very much. I ride a lightweight (not light assist) bike at the moment:

That is the price of a 10.4 Amp Samsung celled bottle battery. And these guys don't know what they are doing? Course they know what they are doing - making money is what!

As we are going radical how about a nice road frame, SRAM automatix, belt drive and a GSM? 14-15 kg? Powered by a 4 Ah Turnigy nano-tech lipoly battery disguised as an oversized bike pump...

weird... mass suggestions or what? I was thinking about same specs since yesterday after watching the Gtech ad. If you can't beat them, join them, sort of thing. Would a brushed titanium frame increase or decrease the drooling effect on the under 40s?

Frankly, I think that my original posts re the 'Justjoined' was entirely appropriate.
Time and time again we have seen johnny come lately's trying to convince us that their product is the best thing since sliced bread.
Why on earth they come on this forum baffles me.
We all own one or more bikes that we have chosen after much thought and also experience of previous mistakes.
Yet still they come, then they vanish.
I'm still right here.

The Freego Raptor is now available via Halfords and e-bikes direct for £500,interesting spec ....single gear,5.5 Ah battery.....three companies and the vat man in the food chain, jam spread awfully thin.
Perhaps the spec is ahead of its time, pioneering can be painful,as is so often the case, timing is everything.
Fed up Spurs supporter, great escape by the Gooners.

The Gtech's USP is the carbon 'sixpack' belt. What does the Raptor have?
Any bike with this kind of battery is bound to be selling on 'I am lean and mean' kind of look.

I have a great interest in what makes a successful product. The Dyson was a new concept in deleting the annoying vacuum bag and changed the whole vacuum cleaner industry by deleting it.The G-tech cordless vacuum was also a game changer in deleting the troublesome lead and allowing access beyond the reach of corded cleaners,it solved a problem....cordless drills had been around for some time, it is remarkable that it took so long to make vacuum cleaners cordless.
But the G-tech bike is not a similar gamechanger,it evolved the electric bike into a direction of simplicity/light weight at the expense of range and hill climbing ability. Haibike have similarly evolved the electric bike into an off road machine, the rest of the industry are taking advantage of changes in technology to develop their particular speciality.
But I don't see currently any innovation which can be considered such a game changer as to shake up the electric bike industry. I spoke at length at Eurobike show to one of the senior sales guys of KTM,suggesting adding lightweight electrics to a lightweight KTM sports bike,he said they tried it in Germany, the sales were disappointing. Maybe light sports bike and electric power are such contradiction in terms that almost no market exists from either direction, that is the sports bike rider doesn't want electrics and the leisure/commuter bike rider doesn't want a sports bike,if that is so the current e-bike development is probably about right and satisfying what the customer requires.
KudosDave
