Neil....what was the catalyst that caused you to stop riding your illegal around Jersey?

Simply can not be bothered with the hassle.

Was stopped going up a hill in traffic on the way to the airport. I fly air ambulance and only ever used the bike at high road speed on the way to a blue light callout. It was a copper I knew, he knew me, and my job, I basically told him after he stopped me, I was not going to stop and talk to him, as I was on way to emergency call. He said OK, but the local motor traffic inspectorate would be in touch to get the bike inspected.
So the next day I removed throttle, cruise, reprogrammed controller and replaced 20 series battery pack with a 10 series, and limited current to about 8 amps and CA speed to 15mph. So making it a slow heavy legal pedelec, so totally unsuitable as a means of transport for me to get to a 'emergency' callout.

The e-bike was always the most effective way to get through busy town traffic to the airport. Often quicker than even the motorbike, as at red lights, I could jump off, walk across the junction, jump back on the bike and be on my way. On my Harley, I can't do that, and no one will pay for Blue Light driver training, like the lifeboat crews have.
So now, even on an emergency call out, I have to go up in the car and delay the flight if I get stuck in traffic.

NeilP....thanks for being so honest and open. I have tried to sell my Kudos bikes in Jersey but most of the dealers want to sell £2k plus Scott type bikes with the greater profit,the end result that there are very few pedelecs on Jersey.
Have you tried any of the legal BPM-CST motored bikes,weight about 20 kilos,the difference from the old SWX motored dutch style bikes is very impressive.

But have got myself a Toyota Amazon LandCruiser now, so back to full time driving.

I have a family member in local police ( an inspector) and he mentioned that the Driver & Vehicle Standards (DVS... or DeViouS as they often get called) people were 'keen' to see my bike. Also a couple of ex Young Farmers Club mates work at DVS, told me the same.
Both the police Inspector and my mates at DVS all have unofficially had a ride on my bikes, they think they are great and the situation is stupid, but there is nothing they can do.

Vehicle rules in Jersey are different to UK in many ways. No MOT, no motorcycle or VW style trikes, one off custom built cars are almost impossible to get registered.

Not riding my bike I have already had to delay the departure of one critical ambo flight because I was stuck in traffic. But the bloody minded tossers who make the rules don't care.

During the summer I guess that I am exposed to the same kind of trafic conditions as you are - wall to wall trafic jams. In the sake of public health ask them what they think about s-pedelecs then? They are approved in several major EU countries and not in the UK - that last bit should please them

The Crown Protectorates all do their own thing, being not in the EU, UK, Great Britain or Britain. Where e-bike law is concerned, Guernsey followed Britain's EAPC regulatins but I don't know if they've adopted the 2015 amendments, including to 250 watts. The Isle of Man has a few e-bikers, three that I know of, but no-one seems to be sure what rules they have, if any. They just ride and no-one bothers them, perhaps not a surprise in the island that hosts the TT races. I don't know what Jersey has done , but I expect that like Guernsey they've also for convenience followed the British EAPC rules, thus blocking the high speed S class bikes.

The only successful prosecution concerning e-bike illegality that I know of was in Guernsey, so it seems that like Jersey, they take their law seriously.

In fairness to them this wasn't the case on this occasion. The action resulted from one dealer reporting another dealer who was hiring out illegal 250 watt bikes when the law was still 200 watts. Sour grapes!

How was he persuing you a cyclist, motorist, runner ? Who ever it was probably knows a bit about e-bike law and depends if he tries again. Vary your route and times if you can to avoid him again. If he tries again and is determined he may try and report you and get the police involved to stop you. If stopped by the police then firstly you may get away with a warning then if caught again confiscation may follow along with prosecution with a fine and points on your licence.

I wouldn't worry cwah. Sounds like a case of small pen!s syndrome. They were clearly annoyed that their bike fitness now counts for nothing to the casual observer when they are overtaken by you on your folder at 30+ mph. Bell ends like this are best dealt with by something similar to soundwave's approach as described above.

I still chuckle to myself about the time I passed a whole 20+ group of lycras and decided to pull over half a mile ahead for a wee by the side of the road. They passed me shortly after while I still had my old chap in my hand and proceeded to shout obsenities at me. Once I caught them up again, I apologised and exclaimed "good stuff that EPO, but it goes right through you, doesn't it", before taking off again. More obsenities followed, but they never caught up again.
