So, what should we do?
our weakest link is the limited resource of our NHS.
Forget about the R numbers for a minute.
Ministers should send Covid patients straight to the Nightingale hospitals and use their daily hospital admissions as a key indicator how to deal with the virus.
These admissions should be analysed every day to see which sector of the economy/age groups should be locked down.

The Nightingales aren’t real hospitals. They are props on the Tory set. There are no nurses or doctors to staff these places, unless you pull them out of the real hospitals and put them in Nightingales.

I think your suggestion is better than what is happening right now though. We are adrift with no leadership or direction.

Thank you.

Correct on every point except being a golfist. I take great offence at the suggestion. I don’t own any golf racquets, an Audi or a Volvo and neither do I have any Pringle sweaters or Farah slacks in my wardrobe. I am extremely boring but I don’t combine it with golf. I have played golf and I was good at it, but as a pass-time, I hate it.

I have discovered being a nuisance on public forums and now I dedicate my life to that purpose, not being a player in a golfing side.

My role model, top man
What a team eh?
Both sides of the political spectrum covered by just two elderly delinquents.

If infection/hospitalisation rates continue to rise, we can expect Nightingales to be needed and fill up. If they are not able to work (due to lack of staff?) they will obviously be completely unsuccessful.

Stuffed Nightingales for Christmas? Or Turkeys?

Another element of "wonderful timing", though by a private company, not HMG this time. Note that this is likely to affect far more than coronavirus testing. I checked and even home testing kits and consumables (e.g. for diabetes) appear widely unavailable at present.

Of course you were good at it.

there is nothing you are not good at.

you are the trumpian we don’t need.

I suspect you were black balled for being to golf bore for even the golf bores.

Boycey himself would sigh and black ball you.

the cost of staffing them is much less than the cost of the chaos that our government is generating at the moment.
So far, Covid costs tax payers about £200 billions plus the restrictions placed on people. Give a quarter of that to the Nightingale hospitals and the problem is reduced by more than half.

Isn't it the lack of suitably qualified people that finally precludes exploiting them to their fullest extent?

We might have hoped that, for example, nurses who maybe lacked ICU training could have been educated in the gap between waves?

Of course there is no aspect of life in which I do not excel. I am a world class bore, one of the best in my field.

For future reference, black balling is a membership process associated with Free Masonry, not golfery.

You can throw as much much money as you like in the direction of Nightingale hospitals, we have insufficient trained staff to make them function. The opportunity to get staffing levels up to speed has been squandered.

We are left with the original choice. Lock down or let it rip. The chance to be clever has gone.

I don’t know why they didn’t appoint Bobby George to manage the Nightingale hospitals at the same time that they put a jockey in charge of track & trace. It would have continued the theme.

For months I've been repeatedly telling you all what should have happened. Government only giving the advice on Covid-19 avoidance.

No threats, no police involved, no enforcement against people or companies, no lockdown. Let life continue with any defensive actions left to individuals, companies and organisations.

Just publish the ongoing number of daily infections and deaths and let a free people decide for themselves how to tackle the situation.

I believe the Covid outcome would have been no worse and quite possibly much better due to a better public mood without the resentment and opposition we see today. And we wouldn't have crippled the economy or wrecked education.

Just heard Johnson on news saying (approximately) "I don't know about you but I've had more than enough of this virus..."

Can he be so stupid as to think that makes any sort of point whatsoever? Other than pointedly return the answer "yes".
It was his attempt to associate himself with the mass of the people, an "I'm one of you".

But the way it is expressed shows utter failure to connect. It is so obvious that we have ALL had more than enough about Covid-19, it simply doesn't need to be said. Certainly not in that semi-patronising way.

Biden was dismissive of UK's decision to break international law as well and could be ok with closer eu cooperation, which is good. But the american electorate like ours has, unfortunately, its share of unpredictable limited xenophobic twats.
Just to clarify. Biden is American, and obviously will prioritise USA interests. However he is both Democrat and Irish American , with real Irish roots. These are important because the GFA was a high point of Democrat Foreign policy. , Even were he minded to ignore it,the Democratic party would not allow him...and he is not so minded. During the last few months of the Clinton administration, he took a private visit to Finnegan's Pub near Carlingford , Co Louth..not the standard US politicians hurrah for sale to the Irish American vote, but a genuine visit to second cousins. I think that should he win, BJ will have ground to make up,to get even cordial treatment

I don't think anyone will be sent to the Louisa Jordan in Glasgow. Aecom has just been awarded a contract as lead consultant on decommissioning the hospital.

Indeed, and that is exactly what would have happened initially with my advice.

A carbon copy of what happened in London, the initial surge with very high infection rate and high early deaths, followed by much lower rates.

I argue that was because of getting it over quickly by letting the most vulnerable get it immediately rather than months/years later and dragging out the pandemic.

Some in here argue that reduction was due to the public reacting and taking the necessary defensive actions.

But it doesn't matter which, it worked and that's what matters.

These idiots in charge think they can stop the tide King Canute style wearing the emperors new clothes.

I hope criminal charges are brought against the people that allowed care homes to get so badly affected.

Their initial premise of not letting the nhs get overwhelmed can be seen as a score draw. But we don’t know what is in the post regarding shutting down every other service it’s provided. Hancock yesterday used cancer patients as blackmail in his latest threats. And we have no idea on future mental health issues and domestic violence thanks to the lock downs.

latest fact we can say. The places in the country with the biggest restrictions have the largest daily increases. This has been true for a month now. So is that a success?

lets put all the vulnerable on the empty cruise ships for an all inclusive all paid 5 star round the world cruise for a year.

that is a joke but only half of one. At some point we have to come out. Even if the vaccine came out tomorrow it would take a year or so for it to be fully effective and what happens if it mutates.

Back to lockdown again?

As someone who has worked and travelled constantly since January I can see the mood changing. From fear to frustration to anger. So much anger around.
