we have to know if we are still capable of world beating performance on our own.
Still !

We haven't been close to world beating since late Edwardian times, and only have to see how badly we did from 1950 to confirm that didn't change until after we joined the EU.

It should be astonishing that Johnson has failed to even tell the Welsh Government why it is OK to reduce distancing requirements. Of course, it isn't. It is simply yet more incompetence and hiding of information.

WG: Welsh Government still has not seen evidence to support reducing two-metre rule
Ms Williams confirmed the Welsh Government is still not in receipt of two-metre guidance which guided Westminster's decision to reduce the two-metre rule.
"At present, the two-metre rule for social distancing is staying in Wales. We will review that when we are able to," she said.
It’s the lack of information, guidance and leadership that is so appalling. All three are absent.

WTF is 1 metre + supposed to mean? If you own a hair salon for example, what do you do? Where are the guidelines stating the physical protection measures you must put in place and the procedures that must be followed? It’s the same for every other business.

It’s all deliberately made vague with bull-**** statements like 1m+ and use common sense. Nowhere is there any standards or procedures for businesses to follow. The reason for that is simple, if they don’t guide people, they can’t be held accountable when it goes wrong. It’s easier to nudge people and businesses along the desired path with vague announcements and then retreat to observe from a safe distance.

How do we know business owners are protecting their staff properly? Who is carrying out inspections? Some business owners are complete psychopaths and abuse their staff. I know one guy who has been bullied into working whilst being furloughed, and if I know of one, there will be tens of thousands nationally. These ***** aren’t going to take care if staff, so who’s looking out for them? None of this has been thought out properly. The government are like junior school children producing a school play without proper supervision.

It’s government’s job to lead, advise and protect at times like this and they have failed comprehensively in every aspect.

Half of the 1m+ is just what we have always known and understood. It is two metres in, more or less, open air. Put something in-between, like a window or a wall or a plastic sheet, and it never was 2 metres. So saying that it can be one metre if there is something else in the way is treating us as if we have no more than two brain cells across the population.

I find the nail bar issue especially ridiculous. A lot easier to devise an approach than for a hair dresser. Maybe a plastic sheet with a small hole in it - people put their hands through the hole, get thoroughly doused in suitable sanitiser, and their nails can be done. The client and operative can see each other through the plastic sheet, talk, wiggle hands, whatever else might be needed. Even pay with contactless.

(Not an argument that nail bars are essential, I find it difficult to understand why we have any - let alone as many as there are.)

Katie Hopkins now up to 105,000 followers in just 4 days. Her posts are now getting 400,000 views. Tommy Robinson has just arrived, Paul Joseph Watson and Infowars are there, Milo Yiannopolous and Gavin McInnes . Laura Loomer is now boasting that she has more followers on Parler than she had on Twitter. This platform is growing exponentially. They can post what they want without any risk of censorship. Trump will follow soon. His RH propaganda man, Dan Bongino, is already there growing fast. General Flynn is marching his digital soldiers, whatever that means. Twitter share price has fallen 10% since KH was kicked out. Things don't look good for Twitter.

There is now Bitchute an uncensored version or Youtube, VK an uncensored version of Facebook and Parler uncensored version of Twitter. All of them are growing rapidly. We need some leftwaffe onto these platforms to give some pushback and entertainment. Anybody else going to sign up? I already have accounts on all of them.

My political stance is slightly to the right of Adolf Hittler, so these platforms you speak of should appeal to me, but they don’t. Beyond a few crackpots like me and you, they are never going to gain any real traction and challenge Face Tube, You Book and Twattier. It just ain’t gonna happen.

BJ believes we can. Give him a chance!
He's had 56 years of chances, time to give up on him.

We are in deep trouble, we've severely damaged our relationship and future trading prospects with Europe, our best customer, without showing any signs of how we can offset that elsewhere. Our economy is in dire straights, forcing a premature freeing of lockdown. Our record of dealing with Covid -19 is so bad that as well as being the worst in Europe and one of the worst in the world, we face the strong possibility of a second wave crippling us further.

Johnson clearly isn't the man for the job in these circumstances, but whoever might take over has no hope of doing anything more than mitigation.

And I see no prospects for improvement in the longer term, simply because we've chosen the wrong paths of being isolated with internal fragmentation, meaning we don't even have a united front as one single governed country to do anything. The Brexit negotiations showed this only too clearly, with England, Scotland and Northern Ireland each with different objectives.

I'm glad I'm the age I am since it means I wont have to repeat the full painful experience of our decades of decline from 1950 on. Once of watching it in increasing despair was more than enough.

I find vfr400 factual and pretty neutral.
it's a good thing that these accounts are migrating to the new platforms though, where they know that they can post abuses at each other all day and allow the now more and more commercial platforms like youtube, twitter and FB to be more like newspapers.

I used to think he present a different if idiosyncratic view with a degree of integrity, the attempt at clickbaiting us makes me think otherwise.

God. There's a closet reactionary bit of me (bit like dr strangelove's gloved right hand) that thinks it would be just like the Yiddish to have such a spot on term for this kind of thing

Do you think I have shares in Parler or something? I only mentioned it because one of us was celebrating Katie Hopkins being kicked off Twitter. I made the point that that doesn't help us at all because she's just set up again on Parler and taken not only all her own followers with her, but many other similar people with all their followers. It's been a catalyst for a mass exit. all that will be left on Twitter is overpaid footballers, celebrities, pop stars and the leftwaffe. It's achieved absolutely nothing.

KTH now has 112,000 followers there. There's no sign of the growth in that number slowing down. It might not be much in terms of the billions of views on Twitter, but Twexit is trending. Only Twitter knows how much it's affecting them. A 10% fall in share price is significant.

I don't give a **** about popularity, Twitter (or parlers) share price, celebrities, or specifically toxic twats like hopkins. You seem trapped in a very expedient, outcome oriented reality. I do care a bit about having interactions with others that have a degree of integrity.

There's always been 4Chan for that sort of thing

What you actually post doesn't seem to fit with that idea. What I see is that you tend to deride or shut down ideas that differ from your own rather than explore the differences. It's like you think you're superior. I'm only saying what I see. Maybe you want to think about it.

an idea is usually a premise supported by an argument. Not Islamophobic/xenophobic diatribes (about "the country being full of mad and/or Islamic guys stabbing people in the neck" for example). or pandering clickbait for opportunistic parasites like Hopkins. I'm always open to ideas. you may want to think about that.

I think, like me, Woosh can see the irony in what you just wrote! It sort of proves my point.
