How precise is the Bluetooth distance estimation?
I don’t know if there is a distance estimator. If two phones come close enough to perform a virtual handshake via Bluetooth, then the assumption will be that the two people carrying them will have been close enough for the virus to pass from one to the other. With Bluetooth connectivity that could be 10 - 20 metres, but if it’s possible to design the App in such a way that a handshake is only performed when a certain Bluetooth signal strength is achieved for a pre-defined duration, that would make the App more useful. But I don’t know if this is possible.

I think we all know this as a reality, but seeing some figures makes it even more impressive as a super-gigantic giga-mistake:

Just 273 people who arrived in UK in run-up to lockdown were quarantined

Exclusive: Home Office figures cover period when 18.1m people entered country
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/05/just-273-people-arriving-in-uk-in-run-up-to-lockdown-quarantined
Can you remember them being driven to the quarantine centres on those busses we saw on the news? All sat next to each other, no masks for them, or the bus driver who went home to his family that evening. Everyone on board smiling and waving for the cameras. I was looking on in horror at how casually the government were approaching the pandemic. The virus was all a bit of nonsense that won’t come here because we are British and we won two world wars and have The Blitz spirit. It only affected other countries because they were inferior.

That was only a few weeks ago. Then the Prime Minister started clowning around, boasting that he was shaking the hands of people infected with Coronavirus and nearly killed himself in the process. The country’s Chief Medical Officer had a little flirt with Coronavirus death, and to round the stupidity off, the government’s Health Minister caught it.

After that it all became a bit more serious, but a lot of critical time had been squandered and we are now paying for it with lives and our economy.

Until very recently, certainly whilst everyone has been told to stay at home and not move, plane after plane load of unchecked people have been arriving in the U.K. from virus hot spots all over the world. They have been allowed to walk out of the airports completely unchecked and with absolutely no knowledge of where they are heading or what they intend to do. It may still be going on, it’s dropped out of the news.

But I guess it’s , “the science” telling us to do this because it’s too expensive to check and quarantine arrivals to the U.K.

Pushing back the start, at least in Europe:

French hospital discovers Covid-19 case from December
Man found to have had virus a month before government confirmed first cases

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/04/french-hospital-discovers-covid-19-case-december-retested

“He was sick for 15 days and infected his two children, but not his wife, who works in a supermarket,” he said.

They suggest he might have got it from his wife. I don't know how they can have any certainty that he infected the children rather than her?

I agree, but let’s give it a go to see if there are any benefits. If the App turns out to be useless, uninstall it.
apparently, Apple and Google participate in the app.
As if they don't have enough info on most of us.
Why?

The UK app seems not to be using the Apple/Google technology. (Though they might have done various things to enable it.)

Apple IOS 13.5 seems pertinent:

iOS 13.5 coming soon: bringing Covid 19 tracing and masked unlocking

iOS 13.5 and iPadOS 13.5 will be coming to iPhones and iPads soon - bringing new Face ID feature for mask wearers, COVID-19 tracing API, Mail security flaw fix and more

Unfortunately, this is why Coronavirus affects the “disadvantaged” more severely.

Neighbours break lockdown for a game of bingo and a BBQ, two arrested
https://mol.im/a/8286575

You wouldn’t find a neighbourhood of neurosurgeons BBQ ing and having a game of bingo in the street. They would be at home, finding things to do and keeping their children under control.
That blue shirt is hanging out at the back again :D

'Biggest failure in a generation': Where did Britain go wrong?
Unlike Italy, the United Kingdom had time to prepare for the coronavirus tsunami. But as the death toll climbs, critics say Britain's response has suffered from a series of deadly mistakes and miscalculations.

And even incredibly the New York Times? now that is rich!

The U.K. Needs a Real Government, Not Boris Johnson’s Puppet Cabinet
This prime minister has set his government up to fail. We can’t afford that right now.

She's missing the point
We need to see the Back of Boris, Gove and all the other leave Cabal of conspirators

I think it would be wise for all governments everywhere to get behind the Google and Apple Apps. Between them, they cover 99% of all smart phone OS. It would also make international travel a greater possibility further down the line if there is a global tracking platform. Having in depth knowledge, Google and Apple are also best placed to exploit smart phone features to extract the best out of this technology.

Instead, we have a fragmented approach with governments everywhere doing their own thing. Politics needs to take a back seat to what works best and provides a pathway out of this mess.

Well I did read (forgotten where) that the strength of the Bluetooth signal can be assessed. Just didn't see or notice what scale of distances might be able to be inferred.

Will try to remember to have a look around sometime.

Not clear if you could actually use both the UK government and the Apple/Google approaches at the same time. Anyone who does travel (lorry drivers, sailors, etc.) might both need and want to do so. Even if you can, there will be problems...

Especially if the app has absolutely nothing to do with Cummings or any of his scum associates

the simplest solution to reducing infection is basic hygiene and more tests, especially the saliva test.
There is no real need for contact tracing which is effective if the infection is very localised.
When infection has geographically spread like it has now, the workload increases exponentially.

I know you don't want a smartphone but even if you did you wouldn't want it to be on 2G.
Just for a very rare phone call 2G would be enough. I really do not have a use for a smartphone, unlike so many it seems I don't when out have a desperate need for some information I can get from my computer when back at home, and being retired I'm frequently enough back at home. And there's so many dead spots in my area I frequently couldn't even get it if i wanted to

And using a couple of decent cameras for my mainly wildlife photography I have no use for that phone facility with its many limitations.

Sir Patrick Vallance has told MPs that genome sequencing suggests the UK got many of its coronavirus cases from Europe, rather than China. "There was a big influx of cases probably from Italy and Spain in early March, seeded right across the country."
oldgroaner@oldgroaner

I say old chap that is jolly inconvenient please don't tell anyone
"genome sequencing suggests the UK got many of its coronavirus cases from Europe, rather than China.
How could that happen after we "Took control of our borders with Brexit"?

Masks, again...

Vallance said evidence in favour of masks protecting public 'marginal but positive'

Back in the health committee Vallance is now talking about masks.

He says the evidence suggests that, in terms of preventing wearers from spreading coronavirus to others, the evidence in favour of masks or face coverings is “marginal but positive”.

In healthcare settings there is a strong case for masks, he says.

He says when people are outdoors, the risk is generally low.

But he says there are circumstances in which masks can be useful. He says the risk of infection at one metre away from an infected source is 10 to 30 times higher than at two metres.

Surely the really obvious thing to do is mandate them for people who come into contact with lots of people, and advise them for most of the rest of us?

For example, the meeter/greeter/security people in supermarkets - ducking and diving round all the incoming and outgoing customers. Indeed, in general, staff have interactions with many people even at two metres.

A single hairdresser might manage, what, six people in a day? A till operator might manage that every five minutes. If the person is extremely infectious, and we know of historical super-spreaders of various diseases, the effect of a mask on the propagation by one checkout person could be huge.
