Good news?

And this too
English #publichealth leader Prof John Ashton has had his
@Twitter
account disabled this evening. He criticised the UK Government #coronavirus #COVID19 strategy on
@bbcquestiontime
and again this evening on
@Channel4News

There will be no news, so with luck people will forget Coronavirus and use the dead as draught excluders

Brought to you by your friendly local thought police in the Murdoch Press...

And on the other hand the Independent carried this

"From an eminent Psychologist"
"Despite the obvious seriousness of the situation it is important to keep the threat in perspective (during the 2017-2018 UK flu season there were

26,408 deaths and 1,692 in 2018-2019 (live link)

and it is estimated only 2 per cent of those who catch coronavirus will die.

The live link is to the Government Annual reports
If partner and I fall ill today, and spend seven days stuck inside, and recover, just who will know?

Any reason to contact anyone at all, NHS 111 or GP, has disappeared, until we get so ill that we need hospitalisation. So all official figures might as well be based on patterns on sponges on ends of sticks.

Actually, let me re-phrase that: If partner and I fall ill today, and spend seven days stuck inside, and don't recover, just who will know?

I became feverish yesterday and had some breathing difficulty in evening (but not much coughing, oddly). Hard to describe, I used to smoke 2 packs a day - it was the same as the sensation after climbing a few flights of stairs back then, except it was ongoing. This morning it's gone (thank heavens). OH however has swollen glands in neck. I've decided to self isolate for next week. She is having some kind of abreaction and I insists on going to work (shes a lecturer in adult education with older students, decidedly unwise, but I cant talk her out of it). Best wishes to you all, I'm afraid it feels increasingly about having to deal with this on ones own (have been to local a and e and under normal circumstances they were not coping)

I think I agree with your wife on this.
We all take precautions but can't put our life on hold for 4 months or more just for the sake of reducing the rate of community transmission.
My wife asked me to close the shop to all callers and stop visiting my customers (I still work in computing) or she'll isolate herself!

government advice, soon to be announced, is that anyone over 70 years old should isolate themselves!
I need to keep active through working to keep my diabetes under control.

Decide which government to follow! Scottish says they are not going to impose self-isolation on over-70s.

We were thinking about what to do while self-isolated (if it comes to that) and thought of playing board games like Monopoly.

Which sounded OK until we got to Community Chest. :D

Is there any reason why a country bike ride can increase the risk of transmission (either way)?
Seems more likely to decrease the overall risk because of increased health.

p.s. or for that matter, impact the final Brexit damage

p.p.s. Not that I expect 'reason' to have much impact on government policy.

Can't see why solitary outdoor activities should be discouraged - rambling, cycling, javelin - it's the team sports / multiple particpants / with spectators being put on hold. Start of cricket season both pro & amateur will likely be delayed / curtailed altogether.

Motorcyclists for instance are already togged up with helemts and gloves when out and about. Just avoid falling off and needing to go to A&E!

Aldi this morning, car park almost 100% - usually at this time it would be around 25/30%. (It is a normal time for us to go out and do our weekend shopping.)

On Aldi's doors:

34399

Quite well stocked, but expect them to be wiped out by end of day.

Till queues much longer than normal.

And staff deserve heaps of recognition that they are still smiling and being as helpful and friendly as they always are at that branch.

Tesco had far more obviously empty shelves. (Their price matching to Aldi was, perhaps, not ideally timed...) Pretty busy and trolleys were very obviously stocking up - soup tins, toilet rolls, etc.) But car park no problem to park.

Tesco had several "5 limit" signs. Ironically, one thing we bought was on a "buy 7" offer...

At last someone has a cure....but don't all rush.... o_O

Hindu group offers cow urine in a bid to ward off coronavirus
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A Hindu group hosted a cow urine drinking party on Saturday as they believe it wards off the coronavirus, as many Hindus consider the cow sacred and some drink cow urine believing it has medicinal properties.

Experts have repeatedly asserted that cow urine does not cure illnesses like cancer and there is no evidence that it can prevent coronavirus.

The “party,” hosted by a group called the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (All India Hindu Union) at its headquarters in the country’s capital, was attended by 200 people, and the organizers hoped to host similar events elsewhere in India.

“We have been drinking cow urine for 21 years, we also take bath in cow dung. We have never felt the need to consume English medicine,” said Om Prakash, a person who attended the party.

I think this is about as credible as anything Boris has proposed so far
ie: not
That's a lot of pish.

This actually happened in the 1970s in my block of flats, Normally it wouldn't have happened since we were all friends, but one owner in his late 60s had told us that he'd bought a run down cottage in his native Scotland and would be away shortly for some while working on it.

So when he wasn't seen from the end of April we weren't concerned.

It was with the hot weather over a couple of months later that hordes of maggots were suddenly appearing in all the flats, unbeknown to us accessing via service ducting. Then eventually a postman opening his letter box was struck by the smell. We rustled up a long ladder to reach that second floor flat to where a window was sightly open and found what was left of Roy, then calling the police.

The post mortem was unable to reveal any cause of death since all that was left of Roy sadly was skin over bones.

There's a moral there for us oldies, never tell the neighbours you are going away for a while until the moment of departure.

The thing to do is go out at midday and take your 10 miles cycle. You are away from others, you get excercise. I hurt my wrist during Storm Ciara, so have been walking instead. Just back from my 1:20 walk along the seashore and housing estates.
