That is the point I was making. It wasn't illegal at the time.
Unless it has been settled in court, I am not sure I agree with you. But that is the nature of legal issues, there are opinions which only coalesce into effective law when a court has determined an issue.

Your answer to my detailed question was cancel Brexit (for the 200th time) and hold GE...
At least predictable.
The whole point of a GE is to appoint a government. It is never an end in itself, some vote for a Party, others for an individual. You can't offer a negative vote, there isnt a column for who you dont want. The idea is to vote for the one most matching your desires, aspirations or hopes.
Who are you offering as a party or leader worthy of YOUR vote.
You will simply moan at and about whoever gets the task.
Come on OG, we know what and who you are against (literally thousands of posts against everything) but for goodness sake stand up and make a decision. Who and what are you for?
If you cant put up then shut up.
I was relatively happy with May, still think her deal was a fair compromise. Holding judgement on BJ, let him have a go. In reality who else is there?

Taking cocaine a hundred years ago wasn't illegal.

Using harvested data without permission 4 years ago wasn't illegal.

They both are now.

Is that clear?

Democracy with all its many faults is realistically the only option. I don't know why you believe I think otherwise, perhaps you can explain?
Well.... as far as I can see you do not respect the result of the ref and think we should ignore it. Have I got that wrong?

Indeed, I've made that perfectly clear from before the referendum and when no outcome was known. Ours is a parliamentary democracy and such vital decisions requiring extensive knowledge of all the facts are rightly only parliament's.

I was opposed to the 1975 referendum and just as opposed to the 2016 one, precisely because I believe in keeping to our democracy.

Changing the system spasmodically to give an ill equipped public a very complex decision has been a terrible mistake. Just look at the chaos and bitter division that has resulted from both referenda, a situation that will continue for many years to come.

The ballot box is and should remain the only place where we make our political decisions.

To suggest that FaceTube, or whatever it’s called, had a major impact on the referendum is preposterous. That type of media is likely to influence younger voters, and even that is a remote possibility. But let’s pretend it did influence them. You have said that young people couldn’t be arsed to vote, and that it’s old gits who voted for Brexit. So by your own logic, FaceTube and data harvesting had little impact.

The real reason people voted for Brexit is because Leave told a better quality of lie than Remain. It’s that simple.

It’s the same in the US. People voted for Trump because he’s more appealing than the Democrats offering of a sour faced washed up old ex-president ‘s wife. The Democrats haven’t learned from it. They are still whinging and talking America down and promoting that ghastly Gang of Four women.

It’s hilarious. Every time a vote doesn’t go the way the left want it to, it’s the Russians, or it’s FaceTube, or it’s lies, or it’s people are thick. It’s actually because the left aren’t offering what a majority want. Dead simple again.
too cynical: there are two reasons why someone rationalises everything as fake news - either because one is too thick/uninformed to understand events for oneself (and have to somehow try to escape the rabbit in the headlight sensation), or because one has made a bad decision (like voting for Brexit) and are trying to justify this mistake to oneself.

I already posted the sort of Government I would like to see, why should I do it again just to amuse you?
Try "none of the above" as an answer.
What will happen is we will end up with a coalition government. regardless of what you or I prefer.

Sorry stealing data was illegal 4 years ago
In the United Kingdom personal data is protected by the Data Protection Act 1998. The Act covers all personal data which an organization may hold, including names, birthday and anniversary dates, addresses, telephone numbers, etc.
The issue is not about data freely given, but that passed on without permission
And the Data Protection act was updated

25 May 2018 before the Referendum on on 23 June 2016

Yes. Correct. That is the point.

When the people who had their data used they had already ticked a box allowing this to happen as they took part in a free 'personality' test.

I could go on and explain more but it's pointless with you. If I said toilets were a good thing you would disagree. You are so far down the rabbit hole you should be called thumper.

Although I think I will point out one thing. 2016 is before 2018. The law was changed after the ref. 2018 is after 2016 and was changed because of the ref.

Idiot.

I didn’t say anything about it being fake news. You have just said that and it has no relevance to my post.

There you go, you have selected “people are too thick” from my list of Left Wing options. A beautiful illustration of why the referendum was lost by remainers such as yourself to the leave vote.

Tbf the targeted voting on face twat etc WAS a major factor in Trump and Brexit winning. In as much as it galvanised people who do not normally vote. That is what ultimately won it for leave. But the bigger question was this illegal at the time?

The answer is an emphatic no.

Now if they harvest data illegally they can be investigated but people are so stupid they give their data away for free anyway. They are told this info will be used and still click to play a game or look at a picture.

But yes You Tube, Face twot, twatter were massive reasons, if not the main reasons Trump and Brexit won.

Check out the Doc on Netflix. The Great Hack.

Scary stuff.
Well done, you nearly understood the situation, apart from the following
They did harvest information illegally the act making it illegal took force a month before the referendum
https://ico.org.uk/.../investigation-into-data-analytics-for-political-purposes-update.pdf

And since you freely admit (at last) in your post that in your own words
"But yes You Tube, Face twot, twatter were massive reasons, if not the main reasons Trump and Brexit won.
The way things will go in future are there for all to see.
Money buys political power, only in the interests of those wielding it.

Now forgetting our usual clashes, ask yourself what future is there for democracy when groups or individuals can target a part of the population that normally is either not interested in politics, or unable to make a decision on what they want, but are identified by spying on them, and deliberately inflamed to come down on a side of the argument they may well not be well enough informed on to know it is not in their interests to support?

Basically it make a mockery of the principle of democracy, replacing it with whoever can incite the vote of the easily persuaded, while you have pinned them into a corner and they are a captive audience.
If as happened the last days before the referendum, the ideas they have been exposed to are not contradicted, you have them literally where you want them vote wise, and as the balance to and for leaving the EU was so close, your half billion spent on this scam paid off.
No wonder vote leave was happy to pay off the measly fine!

The words for this are
Brain washing

Unless this is stopped democracy is no longer a viable system, it can be bought at will

Hmmmm. But. Your Parliament - is the body that gave us the referendum. So.....
But that was their mistake, or more accurately David Cameron's mistake when he promised one, since referenda are not democratic.

Our parliamentary system is democratic because we all broadly speaking win. That is because we elect both a government and all of the oppositions and thus we are all represented. The outcome is that general election results are peacefully accepted as fair.

Referenda means winner takes all, leaving up to half of the people totally unrepresented. That is the great failing of referenda, the outcome being immense bitterness at the unfairness.

The 1975 and 2016 referenda outcomes prove that beyond any possible doubt, both leading to long lasting bitterness and refusal to accept them as fair.

you said "leave told a better quality of lie than remain". That is a definition of fake news.
The fact that remainers have to spell out what everything means to those who voted leave. Including the substance of their arguments is the reason why we are in the mess were in with a zombie government headed by a populist like boris.

JC has based his career on being nagging critic, wether it was his own party or in opposition - maybe you should ask yourself for balance, how much has Farage made from his rabid xenophobic enmity....

I'm no fan of Farage.

Why would you think that?
