Antarctica's warm underbelly revealed
By Jonathan AmosBBC Science Correspondent
  • 13 November 2017

"
The map was made by researchers at the British Antarctic survey and is published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

"The heat coming from the Earth's interior is important to understand the overall conditions that control the dynamics at the base of the ice sheet and hence the ice flow,” explained Yasmina Martos, currently affiliated to the US space agency.

"If this heat flux is elevated, the ice base can melt and produce water that acts as a sliding film.

"One result of our study is that the heat flux is higher underneath West Antarctica, where more ice is currently melting, than underneath East Antarctica.

"Even a little melting at the base helps the ice sheet to slide faster. We also identified areas of low heat flux, which will help stabilise the ice sheet," she told BBC News.

I knew I'd seen this somewhere before, the question is of course how significant the warming effect is, whether it is increasing or decreasing, expanding or contracting, or even on the move.

I can agree with your theory, but it is becoming impracticable.. Like others I value my independence, but I am prepared to compromise when it is in my financial interest. I used to travel by car to Dublin ..Round trip 110 miles, and tolls 6 euro. Now As I have an OAP travel pass, I forgo that pleasure and take the train. Likewise I would like my own ferry to bring me to France, but I don't have 100 million , so I take the commercial option.
Danny - let's face it - you're unusual.

The rest of us are confirmed control freaks.

A few days ago, you could have got odds of 11/5 on Tommy Robinson winning his seat. Today, they've shortened to 17/10.

Another event for 23rd May:

Boris Johnson could be challenged in court on Brexit vote claim
Judge to decide whether to summon MP who said UK sends £350m each week to EU
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/may/14/boris-johnson-could-be-challenged-in-court-on-brexit-vote-claim
£216,577 up for grabs. I'm not surprised.

If you want to crowdfund me with that much money to decide whether or not to punch Boris Johnson on the nose, I'll accept your money, but, like in the above case, the decision will be no.

of course it's legitimate to study the influence of volcanism under Western Antartica but I can't see why it has much effect over loss of ice in recent decades. You are looking at a small (mW/sqm) volcanic heat source while the solar incidence is about 50,000 times greater and much more widespread.

Judging by the size of that chip on his shoulder I reckon he ought to open a Blue Reef fish & chip shop.
As it seems we might well be at war with his fatherland soon if Trump can talk us into backing him up, it could be a good idea for him to find a nice big table to hide under.
Why is it there are so many people about who were not born in Europe telling us where we're going wrong ?
Here's an idea...lets talk about Iran, where shall we start.

Some interesting things in this video.
that's true. Now you see and hear what happened behind the scene in Brussels.
Their negotiators are consistent, systematic and don't hide their approach.

Brexit SHOCK: May told to 'f*** off' by Brussels over THREAT of no deal Brexit
GUY VERHOFSTADT’S top aide told Theresa May to “f*** off” after the Prime Minister threatened to leave the European Union with no deal, shocking BBC documentary footage has revealed.

Which rather urinates on the bonfire of anyone who imagined "No Deal" was a bargaining chip.
It seems the channel is an effective anti stupidity trench.

Some deluded souls regard the EU attitude as "Arrogant" in fact all the arrogance is on this side of the channel, coated in a thick layer of stupidity too.
We grossly overrated our power and influence as usual.
And the Brexit lovers worship Farage as some sort of messiah?
He isn't even a False god
He's a villain, and will not bring "Change" only trouble.

Telling the Prime minister of the UK to F,,k off just about sums up the EU's contempt for us.
They are responding to the contempt we have shown them remember? Or have you chosen to forget the things Boris said?
You are peddling propaganda.
We are on no position to criticise when we do the same thing

I’ve just been listening to Dr Shiekhammerheadrancidbullshinefuckface on LBC. This clown has been instrumental in the construction of the definition of Islamophobia. No exaggeration, the man is incapable of speech. FFS. Much more of this and it could swing me back towards Farage.

She’s lucky that they only told her to FO. She deserved to be physically removed by the collar with a size 12 boot up her arse. The EU owe us nothing. It is the U.K. who wants to withdraw from the commitment.

All of the pollution/ global warming conversation is totally pointless unless we tackle population. It’s people who pollute and cause all the other things. The more people we have, the more damage we cause. Until action is taken on population, I’m not interested in any “green” measures.

It’s like being on a plane hurtling towards a mountain side and arguing over whether the in-flight food should be served in a plastic or cardboard carton. It’s pathetic.

I think it's a short term problem - we need to find something we can do now to reduce the impact while looking for definitive solutions. It's clear that if we do nothing, even with a stable population of only 8 billion inhabitants, our planet is not going to be livable for more than a millennium. The two most resource hungry needs are energy and food. We can probably generate electricity from nuclear fusion and make synthetic food in the next century.

It's true that the size of our population is a massive problem. Just because we can devise ways of supporting it short term is not an excuse for it since it is inevitably depleting the planets resources.

With modern technology and the end of the age of doing everything manually with huge numbers, we only need less than a billion people to be able to continue with our modern world. China with around 1.2 billion proves it by making everything for itself and billions of others.

With less than one billion humans using resources, the planet wont be far from permanent resource self sustainability.

The problem is how to get to that, even if we were able to adopt China's recent harsh population control measures, it would take many hundreds of years to reduce to one eighth of the present population. And throughout that period of many lifetimes we'd have to suffer the economic and social consequences of an unbalanced ratio of old to young.

Probably just easier for us to go extinct.
