I have friends who wanted to go to London for a week because of the favorable exchange rate but they said they couldn't find a hotel that didn't have obscene room prices...

Tell them to come by small boat
"
Tory MP sleeps on boat in east London to avoid 'obscene' house prices in capital"
Another useful dodge is to hire a Motorhome and stay on one of the many campsites around the capital and "Tube" in to see the sights.
When I was working you could see lots of migrant workers moving down from the North to the London campsites from Monday to Friday.
Great way to make a lot of money! and far cheaper than Hotels.
But if they are looking for "obscene rooms" nudge, nudge, wink, wink.....

No they have money, 3 cars, big house with pool and large garden with view, a velosolex pedelec even! So they are used to their comfort they were probably looking for a "nice" hotel for a couple with son aged 6. Over 7,000€ for the week between Chistmas and the new year was what they told us. They went to Santander instead.

Yes indeed prices rising sharply and much more to come from the food sector among others.

The reason that people are still buying is revealed by the credit card data, the debt total rising over 10% this year and at pre 2008 crash levels.

And we all know what follows such high debt levels, a crash as people find they can't service their debts.

Not a good way to approach a change as radical as Brexit.
.
I agree. Obtaining growth by consumer credit is never a good fix.
John Maynard Keynes made the remark that what we seek to promote must not only be better but also substantially better to overcome the evils of transition.
The government needs to show that brexit should be substantially better than staying to unite the country.

Theresa May, the person responsible for overseeing the UK's exit from the EU has now taken a bit of a pasting from a usually very supportive source because of her ineptitude in managing the situation.

I'm beginning to wonder how long she's got left in the job she so coveted.

Here's the link:

Yes, at the top end we are priced for the wealthy Chinese, Russians and Arabs now.

Can't blame the hoteliers though, they are just following the market and pricing by demand. This city of 8.5 millions with not enough capacity to house itself received over 18 million visitors last year, so the demand often threatens to overwhelm the capacity.

The papers all lead with comparing the Bank of England Forecasts with Michael Fish's forecast of no storm, perhaps the least hysterical one is in the Guardian
"
Chief economist of Bank of England admits errors in Brexit forecasting
Andrew Haldane says his profession must adapt to regain the trust of the public, claiming narrow models ignored ‘irrational behaviour’

The irrational behaviour comment is interesting, they have apparently no great grasp of the Quirks of Human nature.
I posted this comment
"
What we are observing is one illusion partially cancelling another, after all since we are no nearer leaving the EU than on day one, there should have been no real economic change.

Speculation has fuelled the fall in the pound, a chance to make a killing.

Then the public sensed that the good times are not going to last and went on a spending spree, giving the illusion to those who wish to see it of a Booming economy.

It is the same economy as the circumstances have not changed, have they?

And this will still be true until we actually leave the EU.

Prices have risen and will change the long term picture, as stocks are consumed and replaced at higher cost, which will be passed on

All the major economic players are still on the board, but if they leave, then we shall see.

In the meantime we have the "Brexit live now you can't afford it later boom"

Naturally this is only my opinion, but then I flatter myself that I am, like everyone else capable of having an opinion, which in my case is based on personal observation not propaganda in the media, and that is not such a common event unfortunately
There is an economist in my family and he is not afraid to say that economists make mistakes all the times because of the large number of significant variables that are not precisely known at the time of prediction.
There is a 'remain bubble' at the moment which wants to believe that brexit will make us all worse off. I think this is no more founded that the belief that the EU will implode very soon. The real problem is that the left cannot offer any better solution than the divided tories.

My family connections in Paris tell me that, in spite of all her 'Farage-like' rhetoric about 'Frexit', the word on the street is that Marine Le Pen has cooled a little since the start of the year from her previous views on the matter.

My understanding from recent media is that although she remains committed to 'Frexit', that may simply be the same kind of public posturing we saw from Farage and of course, she could conceivably be elected President in the Spring which would require her to honour her pledge to present the French people with the opportunity to decide in a referendum whether to remain in the EU or leave.

I'm not sure what to make of this rumoured information but I suppose it's quite possible that Le Pen knows full well that the French business community in particular is very much against any move to lead France out of the EU so she may well feel her work is done if she simply influences the government into offering a referendum - ensconced in a nice position, great salary and a hero to the right-wing just on account of bringing about the referendum she pledged.

As President, she would be able to influence government policy to a degree so it could be that she pursues a different path by going after more stringent immigration rules instead of the far less popular notion of 'Frexit'.

Interesting times!

Good time for the civil servants to go on strike......

Senior civil servants have called for a pay rise to deal with “unsustainable” Brexit workloads. The First Division Association (FDA), which represents senior civil servants and diplomats, said their pay does not “remotely compare with the wider marketplace”.

The union said officials could not do their work to the standard they would like due to an untenable workload and “inadequate” government resources. The challenge of working on leaving the European Union while delivering existing government priorities has pushed the civil service “to its limits”, with officials working more hours for falling real-terms pay.

Nothing to do with Ivan Rogers registration, hehe !!!!
When everyone wakes up to the fact that they have been stitched up by THeresa May over Brexit, could this be the start of payback time for Brexit...I have long felt the view that the Brexit vote will hurt the poor and the Jams, when they realise that May could have a pay battle on her hands, will she deal with it like Maggie?

If Brexit ends up with the government keeping the import tariffs and also tariffs between the UK and EU then its a good revenue earner for the government but its going to make us a very expensive country.

More than 6 months down the road, how close are we to delivering our strategic plan?
Tom
I reckon T May has two years to work that out. Whichever plan she may come up with, half of the tories won't like it anyway so why rush?
The new relationship with the EU will take a lot longer to work out, therefore both the EU and UK will want to agree on a transitional regime.

Summary of all the elections around the UK in 2016.

https://twitter.com/britainelects/status/813758100951957505

Net council by-election results of 2016::
LDEM: +29
PC: +3
GRN: +1
UKIP: -3
LAB: -7
CON: -33

Looks like the people who are most likely to vote in things that aren't a big one off referendum aren't voting for the parties who are in favour of Brexit.

I wonder what impact this is having in the decisions being made by parties?

Be careful that's almost support for Brexit...( from your economist friend)

I,m currently travelling through France...whats happened...they have been friendly in restaurants, helpful and polite in supermarket and even car hire bloke was pleasant...( didn't try and charge cleaning penalty, car cost exactly as advertised, which is a first in France) something is wrong...has Napolean escaped from Elba again...planning an invasion fleet as we speak...
Completely different to 2 months,ago...

On the Umberto Eco messiah claim...rather ironic he,s held up as champion of remainers spouting off on forums continually...when actually his biggest bug bear was social media and globalisation...but then again irony does take some understanding for some..

Having had my moan I have noticed a slight change in the rhetoric..its not quite as negative towards brexit and a bit less insulting towards leavers. So well done. Keep it up another 8000 posts and we might see another positive comment for brexit from a remainer. ( I know I,m exaggerating ,we,ve actually already had 2...)
And whilst I,m at it..wouldnt you remainers be better telling his Tonyness to feck off, he really is damaging what little credibility you remainers have...Strange old world a war criminal donating £10kk to remain...I wonder where he got that from ??? I bet Tom and OG really have got their knickers in a twist over Blair championing remain. You could not write it.
Take care. A ferry to catch...

Ok..ok ..ok..(In Joe Pesci voice)
3 positive comments from remainers about brexit. The fat tw4t closing his restaurants is the third.Best news I,ve had for a while. Thanks Tom.

The disgusting BBC-employed, tory propagandist, Laura Kuen SS berg, continues her attacks on Corbyn and even though the BBC's editorial standards committee found against her and notified the complainant to that effect, no action has been taken against her.

Do you wonder why that is? I don't; the make-up of the BBC is patently clear to any observer evaluating the corporation disinterestedly.

Once upon a time, the BBC may have been an unbiased provider of news but the whole institution has been politicised over a number of years and instead of presenting news matters for the public to consider, we must now suffer an 'editor' providing an explanation of what the news means, be it political, economic or business-based.

Thanks to Vox Political for highlighting the issue.

May i ask what you are on about with this?
"I bet Tom and OG really have got their knickers in a twist over Blair championing remain. You could not write it."

By what giant leap of the imagination have you come up with the idea that we care what this man says? he enjoys no more respect for his ideas than you do for yours.
"You could not write it" so why did you? is it some weird attempt at humour?
