Brexit negotiations could be delayed for a year as the European Union will draft a new mandate for chief negotiator Michel Barnier if Theresa May insists on discussing a new trade relationship at the same time as Britain's divorce bill.

Senior sources for the 27 nation bloc have said they may put the talks, which are due to commence on 19 June, on hold, while they restructure their plans.

They had been planning to resolve the divorce bill, discuss citizens rights and resolve the issue about the border with Ireland before discussing trade.

“If they don’t accept the phased negotiations then we will take a year to draw up a new set of negotiating guidelines for Barnier,” one senior EU diplomat told The Guardian.

Imagine the damage that will do!

"Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation. You were deputed here by the people to get grievances redressed, are yourselves become the greatest grievance.

Oliver Crowell, True then and true now.

Basically the real reason is that she can't get the speech ready until she's sure she's given the DUP what they're asking for.
Yes, but she'll have that in the next couple of days leaving plenty of time to go ahead next Monday. But not using a parchment printed speech.

Personally I think they'll delay the day to stick to tradition. That will also avoid the clash with the start of the Brexit talks on Monday.

if the tories try to go for no deal or a hard brexit, they won't have the majority to pass it in 18 months time. There will be fresh election.
I wonder if a new government can then pull out of A50?
... No as I stated a few times before the letter was sent, once A50 triggered the UK is no longer in the driving seat . That is why I made the suggestion last week that the EU as an act of humanity , petition the ECJ to have the previous letter set aside, on the grounds that there is now no competent authority behind it. The UK could oppose this if they wished and then the action of leaving the EU could proceed.
Any UK Brexit strategy is currently in tatters, Everyone in the world knows that, so it would be insane to proceed.

At the present the UK has a government pro tempore.,in a caretaker capacity only , until their legitimacy is ratified by the new parliment. They cannot initiate any action, except in an emergency. They the politicians, cannot even negotiate. Civil servants can in those circumstances where the parameters have been previously set out.
Simply the UK needs its parliament to meet. This can be a more protracted activity than some of your pundits are assuming... It has taken the NI assembly a number of months and they are not sorted yet. Think about it , DUP makes its proposals , preliminary negotiating team with selected Tories discuss with them. Then both sides bring the negotiated arrangements back to their respective bodies and vote. The cycle might need to be repeated a few times before there is agreement. .. Who knows there might be a few Tories who find what the DUP want as unacceptable... Too soft a Brexit, too hard a Brexit, inadequate social services , excessive social services etc...
The DUP are not a soft touch.

The way they stated it appeared to say no animal involved. Calf is one of the skins used for parchment, though strictly speaking it's then called vellum.

I believe that for the Queen's speech, the parchment will be made from goatskin to be consistent with the centuries of previous stored Kings/Queens speeches. No paper reliably lasts long enough.
.
.. well certainly not againstst those retaliatory nuclear strikes .
But the logic of the need to write the thing on goat or calve skin in advance of the meeting escapes me. I f you want to preserve a record of what was said for historical accuracy , would it not make sense to transcript after the event.?

I must take issue with the following sentence in your message:

"Any UK Brexit strategy is currently in tatters, Everyone in the world knows that, so it would be insane to proceed."

I believe that there is and never was a BREXIT strategy, so it can't be in tatters. There is nothing to shred.

I have always had a very low opinion of May, but in recent weeks that has become contempt and loathing. Her ego is battered, she will be feeling foolish and stubbornness is clearly setting in. She now presents a real danger and if not stopped will do lasting damage in order to try and save face.

Well I would say the score is currently 5-0 to the EU. Not a word has yet been spoken & not a single demand made around the negotiating table. Yet "only I can lead the BREXIT negotiations" has managed to make a complete fool of herself, self inflict wounds on her credibility and destroy any negotiating hand she may have had.

The EU must be shocked and delighted that zero effort on their part has yielded so much progress for them. I bet they can't wait for her to arrive in the negotiating chamber. It's going to be hilarious, for them.

Newton's third Law of Motion
"These two forces are called action and reaction forces and are the subject of Newton's third law of motion. Formally stated, Newton's third law is: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The statement means that in every interaction, there is a pair of forces acting on the two interacting objects.

Therefore this news is entirely to be expected

Sinn Fein 'flying MPs to London for Westminster induction amid fears they will topple May'
SINN FEIN will reportedly send their seven MPs to Westminster in a direct threat to the proposed Tory alliance with the DUP.

The United Kingdom, laughing stock of the Entire Planet courtesy of it's Political system, media and gullible public.

That previous spoof Twitter post was incisively accurate.

Guy Fawkes was indeed the last person to enter the House of commons with honest intentions.

I own a bit of land near St-Gaudens where I am thinking of retiring to.
Does it make me half insane?

It really is sick to witness the floundering PM respond to her self-inflicted crisis by re-appointing the despicable Michael Gove to the cabinet in order to please Rupert Murdoch. Then to pretend that everything is once again hunky-dory in the PCP, we are treated to a video clip of May's cabinet in session with lots of happy, smiling faces round the table.

How desperate must this woman be to cling to power that she is prepared to risk peace in N Ireland by reaching out to such a motley crew as the DUP while trotting out her latest tagline, 'I got us into this mess and I'll get us out!'.......unless she means out of government.

There is a popular party leader and ready-made PM waiting to lead the UK out of austerity and with whichever deal is best for the country in regard to the EU. A Labour-led minority government by way of a coalition of all the non-tory parties is the way forward at this time.

I have a real difficulty believing that the eternally vacillating May actually thinks that the British people might be in any way content with her current strategy going forward towards 'Brexit' talks.

Saw this somewhere
"Teresa May has reinvented herself and gone from "Strong and Stable" (SAS) to "Strong and Humble" (Stumble)
Apt!

perhaps Jonathan Pie?
"

I'm actually quite confused as well Tim, Jeremy Corbyn just won an election while simultaneously losing it, and she just lost an election by winning it.

She [Theresa May] started this campaign with the highest approval of any Prime Minister since year f**k knows, and the country wakes up to this!

He was never gonna win this. She was never gonna lose this. For her this election was her chance to get rid of the opposition and get a democratically, legitimate, authoritarian government, you know like in Turkey...

This is referring to a referendum in Turkey earlier this year which gave the President greater rights.

He goes on to be even more critical of the PM.

And this for Labour was attempting to stop Theresa May from steam-rolling every liberty we had by not losing too badly, well she lost, he won.

We just got ourselves a strong and stable opposition, and that is the best democratic result you could ask for.

Two Conservative Prime Minister's in as many years have gone to the country arrogantly believing they can dictate how the people should vote. Have you not learnt your lesson? The electorate will punish your arrogance. Clinton, Cameron, another example.

I reckon a lot of Tory members are wishing they'd gone for Andrea Leadsom as leader, right now, that's how s**t your night was Theresa.

And he doesn't hold back, not just criticising Theresa May but "Blairite" Labour members too.
And as for Labour's night, all the 80 per cent of Labour MPs who voted against Corbyn, yeah I'm talking to you - you f**king Blairite, centrist, faux-left, faux-socialist, faux-f**king give-a-f**k, how do you feel this morning? F**king glad you're still in a f**king job I bet. 'Cause it turns out, we don't want a Tory tribute act as an opposition, we want a genuine, socialist, alternative.

Can you imagine what you'd have achieved if you'd supported your leader this campaign? You'd be in government right now!

He really, really, doesn't hold back at critics of Corbyn.

This is what happens when you offer genuine socialism..

Do you know who I'm laughing at the most? Not May, I'm almost feel sorry for her. Most of the time she looked like she just wanted to go home and have an Ovaltine. No I'm laughing at Tony Blair, Peter Mandelson, because New Labour is dead, you f**kers. And that's the best result of any election I've ever seen.
