The same will happen with the inevitable third wave. He’s made it very difficult for himself by stating that the easements coming in the next few weeks are irreversible. He shouldn’t have said irreversible, if a decision to lockdown in future becomes necessary, how do you then carry that out?
Just repeat what he did last time and balls this wave up too?
perhaps his ambition is to try for 200,000 ?

There is now talk of a New York variant which may be reinfecting people who have recently had Covid and / or been vaccinated.
Oh Dear
Just a simple question really
Hasn't anyone thought of investing billions in building new vaccine production and research facilities, rather than leave it to private companies?
Or is turning a profit simply more important than saving lives?

Precisely! we should have stuck to the instructions and ordered sufficient to hold enough stock to cover the second jab on time.
And if necessary invested the money (as wasted on test and trace) to build new manufacturing facilities
We did order enough. If you remember, only a few hour ago you were moaning about the U.K. ordering too much and denying others the vaccine.

But why should that stop you criticising everything the U.K. does.

I agree, I think we need an international fund to set up at cost manufacturing centres around the world. We need much more capacity to react to variants. The vaccine we are getting now is just the first of many. We need to be able to move faster.

He did his usual incoherent mumble when someone asked what that actually meant.

I see it as words to placate those who are anti-lockdown. Without real commitment or meaning.

Results have just been released of the AZ vaccine trial in the USA. The vaccine was nearly 80% effective in stopping the disease and 100% effective in preventing people from falling seriously ill.

20% of the volunteers were over 65 and the vaccine provided as much protection to them as to younger people. There were no safety issued regarding blood clots.

More on the trial data here.

Breaking news... AZ jab 100% effective at protecting against serious illness
and no blood clots.

But no one involved in those trials was wearing green socks and yellow mittens. How do we know it’s safe under those circumstances?

I think the EU must immediately withdraw the Oxford vaccine from use and send all supplies across the globe. It’s the safest thing to do.

Micron and the UGP will need to think of something else to put people off the Oxford vaccine now :D

The very last thing we want right now, from a selfish UK point of view, is USA approving AZ and lots being sent there!

Also ironic that we went from no older people (e.g. over 65) getting AZ because it is dangerous. To no women under 55 getting AZ because it is dangerous (blood clots). To safe for adults everywhere. Probably round the block a few times before it finally plays out.

Note how little mention there has been of updated vaccines. I'd have expected something to be happening by now. Even if just animal tests or very early clinical trials.

He can blame EU now... He, ll be doing that at every fluctuation in supply of vaccine. Its the nasty EU banning exports that made roll out stutter...???

AZ made a statement a couple of weeks ago saying modified version would be available this Autumn and inferred no trials would be necessary?? But no dates or specifics were given. You are right tho, it's gone quiet.

I believe U.K. medical experts have devised a fast-track approval protocol for modified vaccine. This itself has been approved for use.

Nimbleness and and ability to move fast is the key to keeping on top of this disease.

Pedantic question:

Can we get herd immunity by vaccination? Is the term appropriate when it is the result of vaccination rather than infection and recovery? Particularly as much of the effect of the existing vaccine appears to be to reduce symptoms, often dramatically, rather than render us immune.

Can we get herd immunity if Covid-19 can a) re-infect; b) mutate and (re-)infect in its new guise?

I don’t think it will ever go away, so no.

Anti-vax, anti-lockdown and anti-everything groups will make sure we never get rid of it. We either get rid of these people or we get rid of the virus.

I criticise what they do wrong, whereas you praise it, I wonder why that is?
And it fact that is exactly what they did by ordering too much, when the manufacturer only had enough to partially supply us, so cut supplies to everyone else

In the old days ..lets say 3 years ago, we would now be entering the Festival season and and all the talk would be about those ticket scalpers ,and why we needed legislation to stop selling tickets at a profit. It was always a temporary situation,.. more punters than product... That is exactly where we are now with vaccine. The UK was the early bird with the clever algorithm, that got all the tickets on line, . The EU is like the parent who tut tuts about it not being fair because they waited until the tickets actually went on sale.

We’ve been down this route before and you’ve had it explained to you.

Like many governments, the U.K. ordered vaccines whilst they were still under development. Remember how we discussed having backup plans running in parallel? Events have shown the the U.K. backed a lot of winners. It could have gone the other way. The over ordering was insurance. It’s why you had your vaccination 10 weeks earlier that you would have done had you lived in France.

The above is not unusual, many countries did exactly the same. The U.K. was quick to order and quick to approve. That’s why we are doing so well.
