The main mask I use I bought ages ago in B & Q for about a tenner, it's on sale now on fleabay for £149 !
Would you believe people are even selling used masks o_O
There is a clown on ebay selling dried yeast ay £7 / sachet. I hope they catch coronavirus and die. That would serve them right.

Just been to the corn store and bought a block of fresh yeast for 30p

Very impressed with Starmer. Great performance in the commons, asking the right questions about returning to work and phrased brilliantly. The BBC seemed reluctant to show BoJo's response.

Seems crazy golf and tennis will be allowed from Wednesday - motorcycle community confused if they have to strap on golf clubs or a tennis racket before going out for a bimble.

Meanwhile London underground this morning !

Seems that restrictions being lifted - getting manufacturing and building back to work while not understanding how transmissions are happening and hitting social care especially* is risky esp for the vulnerable and health & social workers. I think Boris with R < 1 sees spare capacity in intensive care beds as an insurance. If and when it starts flaring up again then it'll be interesting how folk will willingly consent to reclamping down - sneaking in the higher fines is likely to be the tool of choice.

*"The Government is particularly troubled by the impact of COVID-19 in care homes. ... It is critical that the Government understands why this is occurring. ... on 4 May Public Health England launched a review ... This will be published by the end of May.

FFS. That underground situation is terrible.
Stand by for death wave two, and with such a scattergun approach to easing lockdown, no idea what’s caused it and which bits to trim back.

Absolutely shambolic.

Perhaps it's a mere coincidence and nothing to do wth the fact they have been bunging pensioners showing signs of infection into the care homes to keep the Florence Nightingale Hospital ventilators free for those they deem "more deserving"?

Can tennis balls carry CoV-SARS-2?

If so, there is little to no point in mandating a two metre separation of the players.

But I suspect that there has been little or no research into the issue.

(And what about sweat spraying across the net in a close-fought rally?)

Similarly, golf balls, etc.

(Sorry - writing this as a distraction from one of the most awful public appearances by any UK PM. Ever.)

I can't be certain, but is there a single mask in use?

Ah! But we don't have to wear them until Wednesday. So that's OK then.

There is nothing simple about a nuanced phrase or policy. Why has it become the word du jour. (There I go, off into French, following the PM. :) )

nuanced
adjective

nu·anced | \ ˈnü-ˌän(t)st , ˈnyü-; nü-ˈän(t)st, nyü- \

Definition of nuanced

: having nuances : having or characterized by subtle and often appealingly complex qualities, aspects, or distinctions (as in character or tone)

But among large cities London, having been by far the worst, has recently had falling numbers and is outperforming the West Midlands and Manchester.

Showing once again that things are far from being as obvious as some seem to think.

Or the flags on the green. Think how many virus coated hands have grabbed those flagpoles.

That’s because everyone has been staying at home and not packing themselves onto tube trains. I hope I’m wrong, but if that picture of a packed train carriage is typical, I think London will be reclaiming top spot again.

This virus started with one person, and by that one person mixing with other people, it’s become a global pandemic. That mechanism has not changed, it’s not gone away. The only change is that there are now a few more ventilators if you want to take the 60:40 odds of not surviving the experience.

If this is true, then refusal to encourage - even mandate - mask wearing was wanton disregard of our health and welfare.

Face-coverings
As more people return to work, there will be more movement outside people's immediate household. This increased mobility means the Government is now advising that people should aim to wear a face-covering in enclosed spaces where social distancing is not always possible and they come into contact with others that they do not normally meet, for example on public transport or in some shops. Homemade cloth face-coverings can help reduce the risk of transmission in some circumstances. Face-coverings are not intended to help the wearer, but to protect against inadvertent transmission of the disease to others if you have it asymptomatically.
A face covering is not the same as a facemask such as the surgical masks or respirators used as part of personal protective equipment by healthcare and other workers. These supplies must continue to be reserved for those who need it. Face-coverings should not be used by children under the age of two, or those who may find it difficult to manage them correctly, for example primary age children unassisted, or those with respiratory conditions. It is important to use face-coverings properly and wash your hands before putting them on and taking them off.25

True - but I did think that there had been discussion about how golf courses could arrange things to avoid the need to pick up flagpoles. Even if it requires new golf rules. (I don't play and have no idea what they could do.)

In reality we held the EU to ransom with our constant bitching and demands, but you have conveniently forgotten that, and now we are a run by an idiot who today at PMQ's looked like schoolboy up in front of the Headmaster on a charge of abusing himself in the playground

I don’t really know how it’s played, other than you wear preposterous trousers, carry a bag of silly bats, drive an Audi you can’t afford to run and talk shite.

Not so, in my post you disagreed with I explained why London has such improving figures, and they'll continue to improve.

And for more evidence, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales who've been taking a much stronger enforcement line than England are now performing worse than us.

Johnson said that a reasonable worst case could have seen half a million dead. Obviously, praising himself and claiming superior management. But the paper below suggests that, if we are at around 32,000, we could expect another 64 to 96,000 deaths.

Just another model, of course.

DOUBLE POWER LAW FOR COVID-19: PREDICTION OF NEW CASES AND DEATH RATES IN ITALY AND SPAIN

Vladimir A. Osherovich, Joseph Fainberg, Lev Z. Osherovich

doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/2020.05.07.20094714

We predict that even when social distancing is rigorously maintained, the number of COVID-19 deaths after peak mortality may be 2-3 times larger than the total number of deaths up to the peak. Our model has important policy implications for countries currently debating how to ease social distancing measures.
