Hypocrisy as a political tool. Read that as you will.

Trump privately appeals to Asia and Europe for medical help to fight coronavirus

Despite president’s rhetoric that the US would not rely on foreign nations for help, the administration has approached European and Asian partners
The US has been appealing to its allies for help in obtaining medical supplies to overcome critical shortages in its fight against coronavirus.

In his public rhetoric Donald Trump has been talking up the domestic private sector response to the crisis.

“We should never be reliant on a foreign country for the means of our own survival,” Trump said at a White House briefing on Tuesday evening. “America will never be a supplicant nation.”

However behind the scenes, the administration has approached European and Asian partners to secure supplies of testing kits and other medical equipment that are in desperately short supply in the US.

The bit about us (rest of world from USA perspective) reminds me of that old, old joke: The Lone Ranger and Tonto were ambushed by Indians. Lone Ranger turns to Tonto and says "Looks like we're in trouble here". Tonto says "What mean we, white man?"

Unfortunately this is what you get with Fascist regime publications
The Big lie, as Trump would say "Told Bigly"
I think it’s the Mail sending a not so coded message to the government.

Besides that, what a stupid thing to publish. At this time, we need the public to be moderately frightened, not terrified, but to have some fear. Fear causes you to be more vigilant and to protect yourself by not doing reckless things, such as not adhering to social distancing. That article in the Mail is going to cause people to believe they have already had Covid-19 and are therefore immune. They will then relax and start to adopt bad habits, precisely at the time we don’t want that to happen. You can see it happening with the reader’s comments.

That paper works against the national interest. It’s a traitor to the British public.

Just how much does alcohol consumption cost the country each year?

The government has added off-licences and other shops licensed to sell alcohol, including those within breweries, to its list of “essential businesses” that can stay open during the coronavirus lockdown.

What next? Vaping shops, betting shops, cosmetics sellers?

Would be interesting to see tobacco banned... After all, it does seem to worsen prospects of covid-19 sufferers.

For clarety :) , I am a modest drinker. Typically one bottle of wine between us, once a week.

They should actually be closed permanently
New report reveals staggering cost to NHS of alcohol abuse
1 in 10 people in a hospital bed are alcohol-dependent and one in five are harming themselves by drinking

In my view, they should have set up a video conferencing HoC and had it sit every single day. Albeit, some days might only have needed an official statement of where we are.

And when they get back, ban alcohol in the Palace of Westminster.

My twee on hearing the Parliament shutdown
oldgroaner@oldgroaner

It beggars belief that a government that lauds the self sacrifice of the NHS flees in terror for a month! They should all be tested for the Virus and if cleared, locked down at work.

As I mentioned before they should work by conference call (and should have for the last 2 weeks). The extra discipline involved might even mean they need to behave in a more adult way.

The alcohol industry seems to be very powerful. I think there are more issues associated with alcohol than are being made public. Alcohol is quite a nasty substance, it’s an aggressive solvent & de- greasing agent. Imagine that going through your digestive system and vital organs. It wouldn’t surprise me if in years to come it will be considered as dangerous as smoking, by causing cancers and brain diseases.

It wouldn’t bother me if I never saw another drop, I get no pleasure from any drink which contains alcohol. They should stick 200% tax an it to pay for the social costs.

Riddle me this: The U.K. is only testing people for Coronavirus if they are admitted to hospital. HRH Prince Charles has tested positive for the virus, but is only displaying mild symptoms and is resting at Clarence House.

No - in a house on the queen's Balmoral estate. Hence the huge amount of criticism of his having moved from his primary home to a second property against advice. She too has been tested, I think. Camilla, that is.

A very, very poor display of leadership. Disgraceful example to set the public.
