I am assuming the dealer has just done the Bosch training as there are no plans for an official Bosch service centre in the UK run by Bosch or other sub contracted company.

Fair point Flecc but I would expected many people reporting problems if there was a real issue.

One thing Bosch did advise at the training was protecting the motor from spray when you have the bike on a bicycle rack.
Erm...
I know nothing about the Bosch system, but this suggests to me that, if road spray while on a vehicle is a problem; then muddy water thrown up by the front wheel, on singletrack, must be a far greater one?

Been cycling mine to work every day except for few weeks when bike went to electrifyingcycles couple of times for fixing dial thing and a normal service. In this time have had horrendous rains, puddles, floods and such like. One time i had to submerge motor as I pedalled as that was only way home and lane was flooded..... Still going but no idea whether i have caused rustystuff to happen inside. Why is it not waterproof anyhow this motor casing?? Know that hole in casing.. Can we not just squirt so e 'stuff' or something in there?!!

Hi Guys,

Let me shed some light on this as I was the technician in the article.. It was SRS's bike and on inspection the inside of the plastic casing had built up a lot of grime over time on lots and lots of rides. SRS does a lot of cycling in muckier conditions and it was obvious when taking a look inside.

Inside the motor casing some grime had got in. But I might add that this bike came into me to resolve the popping / grinding noise issue on the earlier motor.

This is caused by not enough grease on the sealing ring. Once resolved the seal should be a lot tighter and no dirt can get in. As we found that the issue was resolved after I had worked on it and SRS continued to ride for a long period (until it was stolen) with no problem.

I might add that I have inspected hundreds of Bosch units now. It is clear that the under slung motors can act as a mudguard catching all the grime that comes up from the front wheel. Thus building up over time and physically trying to push its way into the motor.

When I take apart motors inverted up into the frame such as the Haibike I notice how much cleaner it all is as it's not directly in the firing line, the frame protects it and the plastic casing is on top.

With reference to taking the bike on the back if a vehicle.. A car driving at 70mph can cause a circle of wind hitting the bike on the back at 140mph. Therefore water at this pressure is a lot higher than a jet wash and will work itself into places on the bike. Bosch recommend to remove the battery and place a cover over the motor to protect it. Although not essential I have not seen any problems arise from having a Bosch eBike in the back of a car.

Martin

When I asked the question I had no idea I would get such varied and interesting responses. Putting it all together suggests that not all of the Bosch underslung motors have this hole in the stone guard, and so why is it there? I think the way forward for me is to buy the spider tool, and and and perhaps also the speedup dongle, and take it apart to see how much, much if any, damage has been done. Many thanks for the contact, advise and information..

Thanks for the clarification Martin. I must say I'm still a bit surprised that it's even possible for anything to get inside the gear casing. The Panasonic units are underslung in the direct path of front wheel spray and never suffer in this way due to their effective round section sealing strip and accurately machined case halves:

Is the casing not just for aesthetic?
I'd had mine fully immersed on several occassions, had the gears not been sealed, I am sure they box would have failed.
Hi SRS I really like your photo posing with your daughter. I bet you any money that her bedroom is all topsie turvie. :D

Does it sound like this? http://www.e-bikeshop.co.uk/blog/post/fix-bosch-ebike-popping-motor-noise/

Hope your dealer can resolve asap for you.

Hi Martin,
Yes it sounds like in the video, top of the rh stroke, but only occasionally. It did it once before at about 500 miles or so, but only for about 100 yards and never again, until now that is. It pops about 10 times and then goes quiet for a few miles. Is perfectly ok now which I find a bit odd! I expect they will want to send it away.....

Yep, it will start popping more and more until it does it constantly no matter what.
No need to send it away, its a 15 minute job for someone who knows what they are doing. Cost more in postage & time etc sending it off.

Anyway good luck!

As its a bike shop that sells electric bikes, rather than an electric bike shop (I couldn't find any near to me) I think that's the way they will want to go. I have seen a video somewhere of this repair being done.. Was that yours?
