Advice for a newbie thinking of a 20 mile commute

Assuming the bike is the one in the link below it should do the job. Not clear who makes the motor, but it's running at 36v and has a reasonably sized 11.6ah battery. That should get you there and back, even if you use higher assist modes to reduce the effort you put in. The battery will need...

    halfords city folder

I saw one of these in Halfords yesterday. It looked quite decent for the money. As ever with this type of generic Chinese bike, reliability would be my concern. The Halfords Connect bike also looks decent, but I'm aware of lots of problems with those.

Ongoing reliability of Kalkhoff/Focus Impulse 2 motors

Looks to me as if the OP has left the building, possibly a forced ejection given his profile now comes up as 'Guest'. Few ebikes have immobilizers, although you can remove the display on Bosch and Yamaha crank drive bikes, so a thief would have to ride away unpowered. Which presumably a thief...

    Puncture

You can't fix punctures in the rain - oops, sorry. As you say, you can provided the tube is dry. If it's cold and wet the rubber solution can be reluctant to 'go off', so a self-adhesive patch is easier to use in those conditions.

    Puncture

Gaadi. Available from a few retailers including Rose and Bike Discount. I have one, but have never had to deploy it. A member on here had one in each wheel with no problems. http://gaadi.de/?lang=en

    More ebike woes

A competent mechanic would have reached that point in the diagnosis in under an hour - if left alone to get on with it. What happens in many shops is the mechanic is not left alone to get on with it because he also has to serve customers, answer the phone, fix a puncture for a customer who is...

    More ebike woes

The difference in build quality and components of Riese and Muller is night and day compared to a Cyclotricity. So it should be for four times the price, but it is still so however you cut it. No guarantee a R&M would be reliable, but if it broke I can guarantee it will come apart and go back...

    More ebike woes

The, er, chain of events sounds about right, so I think the bike shop is being honest in that respect if unacceptably tardy in keeping you updated. Yes, you can straighten a bent mech hanger, but if the shop did that and it later broke with nastier results - derailer entangled in the wheel -...

Choosing the right bike! Which one?

Multi-modal commuting by ebike sounds attractive but doesn't work well in practice. Even my Brompton Nano - which was approximately 100 times handier than any full size wheel ebike - was hard work on a train. It was mostly easier to leave it unfolded. The short wheelbase and small wheels made...

Choosing the right bike! Which one?

The Zephyr is a heavy, unwieldy lump of a bike. The 'folded' package is difficult to lift into the back of a hatchback and certainly not easy to carry very far. It would go on the train unfolded, but I think you would want to wheel it to your workshop before folding.

    Complete Wheel set for 29er

The Magic Marys are the least puncture resistant of your tyres so would benefit most from tubeless. Putting Marathon Pluses on your new lightweight rims is a bit daft given Marathons are among the heaviest push bike tyres.

Looking for a reliable ebike to do the London knowledge on, please help!

Hope the plan works. I suppose most want to rattle through the runs as quickly as possible because they are trying to fit in doing the Knowledge around earning a living at something else. I've never heard of anyone doing it on a bike, electric or otherwise, but I expect it has been done.

Looking for a reliable ebike to do the London knowledge on, please help!

To be serious, you need to think carefully if an ebike is suitable. A moped is the usual tool, as you know. Lots of starting and stopping will slaughter any ebike battery, and you may find being able to do only 15mph in between will be too slow.

Looking for a reliable ebike to do the London knowledge on, please help!

Do you know who I had in the back of the cab? Geezer wiv one them electric bikes, but his battery was flat. I ask you, what's the point of that? 'e reckoned someone told 'im there was no hills in London. Take the knowledge Blue Book, the first run is Upper Street. They don't call it Upper...

    Rear break pads

As you've probably now gathered, when you brake a bicycle the vast majority of the weight transfers to the front wheel. This means two things, the front wheel is pressed firmly into the surface so is unlikely to lose traction, and the rear wheel becomes 'light', making traction loss more...

    Complete Wheel set for 29er

You might be lucky and your chosen tyres pop on no bother. But there's no doubt tubeless ready rims and inner tubes is the worst of both worlds. You have all the (possible) aggro of fitting tubes and the tyre, but none of the benefits of tubeless. The wheels you have are good quality, but you...

    Complete Wheel set for 29er

Fitting a tyre with tubes to a tubeless rim is harder because the well is shallow, and the bead seals against a ledge on the inside of the rim. With that in mind, I would seriously consider going tubeless. Fixing a flat on an inner tubed tubeless ready rim at the roadside can be difficult...

    Tyre advice please

Probably very little in it, and it may depend on what's available for a sensible price. I would go for trailstar, sacrificing a tiny amount of grip for better rolling and durability. Tubeless makes a lot of sense on a tyre of this type. That's another kettle of fish, but worth thinking about.

    Tyre advice please

Rapid Robs are a good, general, knobbly tyre. As said, you will get more grip from something more aimed at mountain biking, such as Magic Mary. However. more grip equals softer compound, which in turn means a greater likelihood of punctures, and faster wear on hard surfaces. The bar chart in...
