Hi Eddie, I forgot to mention, I'll ride in any weather and any conditions. Having said that, a nice dry sunny day is good to have.

I got off to take the picture. A brilliant 1st day off road for my new bike. As you can sees, I was going to ride what ever the conditions. The bike coped extremely well and powered through miles of these water filled ruts.

You are probably right. An alternative solution: Lets have two islands opposite each other, a gap in the middle, just wide enough for a bike only. Traffic should be calmed nicely and people can park where they like without obstruction.

Why not have a narrow gap through the island for cycles? I am sure I have seen this in places.
