These kind of traffic calming measures I find more often than not that cars behind try to overtake cyclists before they get to the island (moving towards the blue car). If I spot a vehicle coming up behind me I usually move further out into the road to close the gap.

Have any of you got any photos of hotspots ? How would you treat the situation above?
Why not have a narrow gap through the island for cycles? I am sure I have seen this in places.

Great in theory but in practice two things can happen:
1. The bypass becomes cluttered with gravel, broken glass, wet leaves etc
2. People park cars either side of the island blocking access to the cycle bypass lane - mainly because they're thick and selfish.

We have a lot of this.. see vid. I bought the camera hoping to film these jokers cutting me up here! Because its electric I am deceptively fast up this incline, but they just dont want to give way..

You are probably right.

An alternative solution: Lets have two islands opposite each other, a gap in the middle, just wide enough for a bike only.
Traffic should be calmed nicely and people can park where they like without obstruction.

This is where a mirror wins, it gives plenty of warning of someone about to do that and I just allow for them by slightly easing off as they approach from the rear.

Equally the warning of their approach when it's too late to do that means I can dominate by position in good time without causing the driver to suddenly brake.

Dominate by position! I like that phrase a lot....
