Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

Thanks for coming in @flecc, a useful addition to the debate. I note you stress the word "use" and see the point you're making. However the link here.... https://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/threads/uk-electric-bike-usage-law.24059/ ....uses the phrase"bikes fitted with off-road switches or...

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

Well call me simplistic, but I would define it as 1kw delivered at the output shaft of the motor. But I suspect in the world of ebikes, it's not that simple! An interesting point VFR. So as you all know the industry far better then me....How have Bosch managed to get the latest motor...

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

Sorry chaps, I'm back again! Forgive my ignorance of the whole industry, but does that mean that a manufacturer could take a 1kw motor, find some sort of testing house to "rate" it at 250w then sell it to me as legal?

Based on the size of this thread, maybe there's a market for a bicycle version of this: http://www.scottoiler.com Business opportunity anyone?!

    Traffic Boom - legal?

I've no knowledge of the legality of it, but I suspect you'd just be turning yourself into a target for every cyclist-hating nutter out there....

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

I wonder if he'd still honour the warranty if Bosch refused to repair the damage because they knew the bike had a dongle in it...

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

Yes, I deleted because (with hindsight) I felt I'd put you in an unfair position as a retailer. Thanks for answering though- a very interesting insight.

He probably makes enough of a margin on the bike and the dongle that he can afford the risk. Just don't get your firmware updated, whatever you do or you'll be back to snail pace!

Yes, I should have made it clearer I was being ironic there!

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

It's those sort of injuries that the EU is trying to protect you from SW! See, none of us can be trusted at anything over 15.5mph!!

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

I don't doubt. But as long as you've got some sort of "certificate of conformity" to wave at the judge, you can get away with anything!

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

Thanks @WheezyRider, you said it far more eloquently than I managed! I should add, I'm well aware of my sins (750w motor, thumb throttle etc) and I'm perfectly comfortable with my choices and the risks I take. But I think this thread might be depressing reading for the OP who seems very keen to...

Very nice- 52v? So did you interpret it as having already had a firmware upgrade or was I just dreaming?!

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

Agreed. We all need to start crashing a bit more to get some cases through the courts! (Bit of an innapropriate joke I know). In all seriousness though (and based on the differing opinions represented here), I think the Hanlon case could be a get out of jail free card for anyone caught using an...

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

Thanks @Nealh. So (in my world anyway), that's an example of a fully legal kit that couldn't fall foul of the law

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

In the event of an accident it's the end user's fault without any doubt, because we're all responsible for our own actions. My point is that in the case of any ebike (regardless of whether it's a kit or shop-bought), the very fact that the speed limit can be increased by the end user (even if...

That looks interesting. The listing suggests they've already done the firmware upgrade. Have you ordered it with the 850c display?

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

"The Department of Transport say that electric bikes fitted with off-road switches or modes, that enable a bike’s motor to continue assisting to speeds beyond 15.5mph, do not comply with UK EAPC law" I can't see how any kit (even if it is only 250w) that allows the end user to remove the speed...

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

I suspect you're right @soundwave . With English case law being made up of precedent, I wonder if Thomas Hanlon did us all a favour. Once you've got your 2000w Bafang, get yourself into a race with a copper to test the theory!

Ebike still legal if I run 36V motor at 48V and limit speed to 15mph?

So being pedantic (i.e. just like a prosecution barrister would be), surely that means that all such bikes are in breach of the law because the user is able to bypass the speed limit...
