Speed Pedelec successfully registered with DVLA (Riese & Muller Cruiser HS Vario)

Manmikey, I admire your spirit for riding on with that list of ailments. I genuinely believe that being on two wheels is good for the soul. Good on ya fella! I also admire your patience in going through the bureaucratic rigmarole of registering your bike. I'm curious though (genuine question)-...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

I put a TSDZ into a modified early nineties Specialized Hardrock (my profile pic). That's a great vid, and summarises exactly the sort of easy off roading (apart from the balance beams) that I like to do. Speaking as an ex-motocrosser, the back end disagreeing with the front is when the fun...

Speed Pedelec successfully registered with DVLA (Riese & Muller Cruiser HS Vario)

Interesting thoughts Flecc. The 1950's were an interesting period in personal mobility. Bicycles doing 12mph, autocycles (BSA Winged Wheel et al) doing 20mph, smaller motorbikes doing 30-40mph and cars/ full-sized motorbikes going "full speed". Even allowing for a smaller population, that...

Which Bafang, display & tooth choice?

I'm no Bafang expert so I'm sure someone with more experience will be along shortly. In simplistic terms though, the smaller the chainwheel = the lower the gearing. And the lower the gearing = the less load on the motor (at the expense of top speed)

Which Bafang, display & tooth choice?

Hi Timneo, and welcome. Battery size is the eternal debate. If you go big then you've got range to spare but they weigh more (sometimes a lot more). One thing to allow for is degradation of the battery. If you go for a small one, it might not have the range you need as it gets older. Regarding...

Speed Pedelec successfully registered with DVLA (Riese & Muller Cruiser HS Vario)

I would imagine it would be just as easy as getting a kit car through the SVA test, i.e. a total bureaucratic nightmare! The government are so short-sighted around s-pedelecs. They're absolutely perfect for the typical 10-20 mile commute that most people do in their cars.

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

I've just finished my first ebike build and am wondering if a longtail would suit me better. I was watching a Ute on ebay at the weekend but didn't bid. I'm a compulsive tinkerer, and the idea of a longtail with downhill forks and a BBSHD mid-drive has a certain appeal

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Hi Pedro, I know nothing about these longtail cargo bikes, but they seem like a pretty handy tool. I'm curious about your "a bike not known for its rigidity" comment. Are these Konas not up to the job?

Tongsheng with throttle (8pin) trying to connect to 860c display

Peter, thanks for that link. Quite spendy but my soldering skills are terrible so I might be tempted. Staps, you're right- that ES thread is an absolute beast! I've skimmed it but sadly don't have a spare week to read (and understand) everything in it. If either of you (or anyone else)...

Tongsheng with throttle (8pin) trying to connect to 860c display

Staps that's really interesting, thanks for coming back. I've got a TSDZ2 with VLCD5 display fitted to my bike. It's got a thumb throttle which plugs straight into the back of the VLCD5 display. I haven't ordered the 860c display yet so I haven't had one in my hands to study it. Are you saying...

Tongsheng with throttle (8pin) trying to connect to 860c display

Hi Staps Are you converting to 860c in order to do the firmware upgrade on the TSDZ2? This is next on my project list, so I'm gathering info.... Cheers Gavin

    20 inch 48v 250w front wheel/ kit- seeking recommendations

Nealh- thanks a lot for such a comprehensive answer. In fact it's so comprehensive that 3 days later I’m still researching it! It’s really highlighted the different complexities between a mid drive and hub motor purchase decision. I’m nearly there (I think) but I’m getting my knickers in a knot...

    Advice Needed for Conversion Kit

Rob- glad to be of assistance. Most of the challenges I faced were caused by the fact that I knew nothing about pushbikes, so I was trying to build a pushbike from scratch as well as adding an electric motor to it. The main challenges were: I thought it would be a simple thing to put modern...

    Advice Needed for Conversion Kit

Hi Rob I should preface my answer to your question by saying that even having built mine from the ground up (with the exception of the motor) and now planning my second kit build, I still know very little about bikes and converting them. There are some seriously knowledgeable people on here and...

    Advice Needed for Conversion Kit

Chris- I feel your pain and empathise with your confusion around ebikes, however don’t despair. I started planning my ebike project a year ago, and having spent all my life riding and racing motorbikes I thought it would be an easy cross-over. It isn’t. Pushbike manufacturers seem to enjoy...

    20 inch 48v 250w front wheel/ kit- seeking recommendations

Hi all, I’m hoping to pick your collective brains…. I’ve just completed my first conversion- a TSDZ2 into an upgraded early-nineties Specialized Hardrock. I really enjoyed doing the conversion as it threw up a number of interesting challenges. I’m loving my new toy, and really rate the...
