Trek Powerfly ( only gone and ordered one )

Sourcing spares locally could be issue with Bergamount. Especially frame specific ones like suspension brushes and derailleur hanger. I face same problem with my Cube, luckily bike.discount carry large range of Cube specific spares.

Ebike for wife 5 foot tall

Given how little riding she has done, I suggest hiring a ebike for half day. Keep riding to seal surfaces or smooth tracks like canal paths, no mtb tracks. If she likes it then start search for a bike.

You can't beat Wellington on good day, unfortunately they are few and far apart especially this summer. Luckily MTBing is not that weather dependent. NB photos above are from top south island, not Wellington. .

How fast do you go on legal ebikes that are not derestricted?

On flat with no wind can maintain 27-29km/hr on FS eMTB off road pressures. It was a real surprised when I test rode it. With road tyres should be able to do low 30s.

Takaka hill. When you get to top of Takaka hill (between Nelson and Takaka) there is gravel road turn off heading north. After 10kms gravel road ends in regional park from there it is onto MTB track that takes you to outskirts of Takaka. First half of ride has lots of tree roots and rocks, your...

These photos are from Dunn Mountain ride, on out skirts of Nelson (NZ). The climb to summit is 14km up old railway line starting in Nelson suburb and ending at 900m in middle of mountains. The railway was built in 1890 to haul copper ore down from mountain top mine, horses towed wagons up and...

    Whyte Coniston (2016 model)

E012: When you turn display ON make sure there is no pressure(feet) on pedals or they are moving. Outside of this I occasionally get problem with display not turning ON. Unclip it and plugging it back normally fixes first time. Also check battery discharge, on mine it discharges to 15% then...

    Pear tune

Given number of people fitting dongles, don't be surprise if future drives have GPS chip fitted. The plus side is it might improve our current bikes resale value.

    NuVinci 360 gearing

Shimano 8spd or 11spd hub with manual or DI2 shifting are worth looking at. Few bikes doing them with gates drive. Heard mix stories about 11spd reliability but 8spd seems to have good reputation.

    Automatic ???

Volt do a steps powered bike with DI2 (electronic shifting). Gives her option of manual ( press button to shift) of fully automatic. Even manual mode it still automatically shifts to low gear when you stop, making starting off easy. NB any STEPs bike with Di2 hub supports this feature.

Changing front chain ring for 38-40t should help a little on hills. Worth try especially if higher gears are not being used at present.

Advice please for a "commuter bike"

The factory mid drives(Bosch, shimano, Yamaha) with right gearing shouldn't have any problem with these hills. Unfortunately they start around £2000. Hiring a bike for a few days would be best way to find out if you are up to this commute on regular basis.

Trek powerfly 9 FS or Levo FSR comp - what would you go for?

When I've used the bosch walk assist it was just as easy to carry bike for short distance. The Shimano Steps seems work well on wife's bike but you need to put it in high gear, easy done it while in walk mode. Was good on sandy beach and up some steep stairs. I bought Cube without trying Levo...
