How fast do you go on legal ebikes that are not derestricted?

How much slower than a road bike am I? I want to be as fast as a road bike on the flat ideally.
Normal cyclists rarely do more than 15 mph
Roadies train at 15to 20 mph and race at 25-30.
The bike makes some difference.
On a Salisbury I struggled to hold 15 mph with assist.
On my BH I ran around at 18 mph average.
On my recumbent I can cruse at 20 on the flat without assist.
I managed a long day cycle at 15 mph moving average over 8 hours without assist.
With assist on the recumbent I'm nearly as fast as SW but I stay legal.

nope its waight and drag the faster you go the more air resistance you will get, you can get a bigger motor and batt but you are just adding more waight so less distance you will get at speed.

I have an old bike with the current cyclotricity 250W kit. It uses a road chain 53-11 (I think).

They say its not derestrictable so I'm wondering if theres anything I can do to overclock it.

It runs on a 36v battery so it should easily be able to do more than 15.5 mph.
Just make sure that the next kit you get, if you ever do, can be de-restricted. Mine is set to 19 mph. So I see '20' on the clock as it cuts off. If it couldn't be tweaked, I wouldn't stand an ice cubes chance in hell of keeping up with guys like this!

I still had to work to keep up with this guy by trying to keep it at 19 mph. Now, that's only 3.5 mph more than street legal. But it's a massive difference in real world use.

That guy was working hard trying to keep ahead of you ,and his Road manners were lacking in comparison with yourself, shame you didn't have that little bit extra you could of really peed him off.

You're talking rubbish......No one is nearly as fast as Soundwave. Rumour has it he has artificial bionic legs with a dongle.

Does your kit cut out at 15.5 mph? Also are you running flat bars or drops?
Yes cut out is at 25 km/h and the bars are trekking bars but turned down a bit so I am between flat and drop bar body angle. Air resistance is felt at +40 km/h and becomes noticeably hard at 45 km/h, my top speed down steep hills in that position is about 53 km/h, lying down I have topped 62 km/h on my previous hub motor bike.

I ran the GSM mid drive unrestricted (no speed sensor) for about 200 km. It assisted to 40-45 km/h easily, BUT... Drawing 15 Amps constant from the 10.4 Ah battery wore it out very quickly. It is now basically an 8 Ah battery.

Yes, so long as the motor cuts out.. in my experience you still get other cyclists moaning, they presume you have a max 15.5mph speed!

John
Not derestricted . ... What a lot of conditions would "restricted" not suffice?

Well, I ride about 12 miles to work with no attempt at racing with my work boots, packed lunch and a small box of tools. I seem to average somewhere between 15-17mph.

Fellows who look a bit keen on road bikes seem to be doing around the same speed, housewives with wicker baskets and headscarves substantially slower.

The occasional lycra clad missile whizzes past but I don't mind :)

I pushed hard today and was able to reach 22 mph for a little bit.

Average seams to be about 18-19.

Might be able to reach 25 mph when I get stronger. But seam to keep up with most roadies now, just the superfit carbon boys go a bit faster.

Also do you think I shoud use my gears and swap down to a lower gear when reaching traffic lights and does switching to a lower gear still help with hills?

Hills are still hard but the motor helps a lot.

On flat with no wind can maintain 27-29km/hr on FS eMTB off road pressures. It was a real surprised when I test rode it. With road tyres should be able to do low 30s.
