Couldn't you just add a 12 kg weight to a normal pedal only MTB to get the same effect?

How far is it that you envisage driving? I originally bought a folder so I could do what you want, but found it easiest just to ride from home, obviously if you need to drive 10 miles to get somewhere nice to start your ride from that's a different matter.

but I've not had a heart op. I do have an autoimmune disease though which limits my available muscle power, even though my actual on bike fitness is higher than an average healthy person.

I have to say that's the first time I've seen a CD recommended over a hub motor for someone who is either ill or weak. Up until now it has always been said the hub motor is superior.

That's why I said could I'm with you. but this thread goes to show there are people out there who buy bikes that don't live up to their requirements and expectations. I have my own views as to why, but that's me speculating.
