Disappointment! And a nice "Plan B"

Thanks :) When I say 17-18 mph, it is only a guess since I have no speedometer yet. I took it out again today, and found some pretty steep hills. It tackled everything I could throw at it, with some assistance from me of course. I'm really feeling the bumps in the road now too, which is...

Disappointment! And a nice "Plan B"

My crystalyte kit arrived and I started fitting it to my mountain bike but came accross a few issues. After modifying the controller (with instructions from Crystalyte) to disable the pedal assist so that I could use the thottle only, the following problems stopped further assembly: 1) The...

What size battery do I need??

I'm confused about your reasoning here. As long as the physical size ("D") and the number of cells is maintained, the capacity of the cells should be simply "as big as possible". You just need to balance maximum capacity against cost.

What are the major factors that persuaded you to get an electric bike?

Slightly different reasons for me. I'm an avid mountain biker, and have a good level of fitness already, however for me a lot of the fun is the downhill sections of the trail. Generally, a typical ride will be 50% up, 50% down in distance, but 95% up, 5% down in time. I wanted to change...

    LBS - any good?

Having worked in a cycle shop for a while, while I was an university, I am in a good position to maintain everything on a bike without ever needing to seek assistance from my LBS. (Including wheel building, which is a nice bonus! :)) Customer service isn't the easiest thing to cater for given...

Looking for something with a bit more 'oomph' :)

Crystalyte Europe There's been about 16 emails going back and forth today (while I was at work :)) with lots of info I needed. They're really quite helpful :)

Looking for something with a bit more 'oomph' :)

Update! I have decided to go with the disk brake version of the 409 (more torque but lower speed) kit that I listed earlier, but with the controller upgraded to 20A instead of 12A. Ordered and awaiting delivery! :D Wow I feel like a child awaiting gifts before Christmas! lol

    Chainring upgrade how many teeth

Gear ratios in their simplest form are just pretty easy to work out, but to answer your specific question we also need to know the size of the rear as well. (And depending how far you want to go with this, your wheel size too.) Without those bits of extra info I can tell you this much: The...

Looking for something with a bit more 'oomph' :)

I have emailed Crystalyte-Europe, to find out whether the 409 motor can take a 9 speed freewheel, and a disk brake at the same time. They say it can! :D Something I forgot to ask about was the battery mounting, using the bike's bottle bosses. My frame is not a standard diamond frame. Here are...

Looking for something with a bit more 'oomph' :)

Its interesting that I started this thread asking about 1000w motors, and now, from your advice, seem to be thinking that 350w is actually better for me because of range, price, weight and kit type! :) After weighing up the options, BionX and Crystalyte are still top for me, however given...

Looking for something with a bit more 'oomph' :)

Oh I do realise that the more power the motor uses, the shorter the running time will be for a given battery, but don't really know how about battery sizes, weights and costs. If I can get a 10 mile range over off-road, bumpy, hilly terrain I would be pretty happy. On the other hand, maybe...

Looking for something with a bit more 'oomph' :)

Maybe I'm asking too much, but I do want some speed as well :) If I can get 20mph over the bumpy stuff, I'll be pretty happy with that.

Looking for something with a bit more 'oomph' :)

Andrew: I'm very interested! Even if they may not be what I am looking for long-term, as an experiment it could be very worthwhile to get a feel for what these things can do. Thanks

Looking for something with a bit more 'oomph' :)

Oh I didn't realise that both the Bionx and Crystalite were brushless and gearless. Am I right in thinking that that makes them just about as quiet as an ebike can be? (I large plus in my opinion) I notice that the Bionx motors are very narrow and can take a disk brake and a 9 speed...

Looking for something with a bit more 'oomph' :)

Thanks for your comments so far :) The bionx does look pretty nice, however according to their website, the higher powered ones are not available in the UK. Those crystalite kits look good too, in particular the 350w for its torque or the 500w for the speed. (Why can't they do a 500w...

Looking for something with a bit more 'oomph' :)

Hello all :) I'm new to all this electric bike stuff, and as yet, don't own one. For me, adding some additional power is not about getting around, or being able to get up hills. I'm a mountain biker, and my level of fitness is actually quite good, but I just want more speed and more...
