Why do people think 25km/h speed limitation is safe?

Flecc, seriously... I gave you the mathematical proof that what you were saying was incorrect and you still nitpick on things that you know full well doesn't change the facts (or at least ought to know, if you are in fact a qualified engineer). Your 18,500 odd posts doesn't make you an expert...

Why do people think 25km/h speed limitation is safe?

I wasn't aware you could get hydraulic rim brakes so this is probably worth a reply; It's not the hydraulics that makes the difference, it's the fact that you can set a pad in a disc calliper a quarter of a millimetre away from the disc and it not rub. There is no way you could do that with a...

Why do people think 25km/h speed limitation is safe?

Where the question is "which is the best method of braking, pressing ones shoe against the tyre or a rim/hub/disc brake" then of course it's reasonable to compare the two. In fact a comparison is necessary to answer the question. Yes it is calculated in identical ways, essentially it's all...

Why do people think 25km/h speed limitation is safe?

Except it's not is it; both are mechanical systems designed to exert a braking force on a rotating axle. It seems odd that you feel it's not reasonable to directly compare them, parrticularly as you seemed perfectly happy to compare rim brakes with discs which, again, are different mechanical...

Why do people think 25km/h speed limitation is safe?

Except you're forgetting contact area, pad compound and the greater amount of force a hydraulic calliper can exert against the disc. It's not all about diameters; my old car had drum brakes on the rear which were larger diameter than the front discs. Guess which ones had more braking force...

Why do people think 25km/h speed limitation is safe?

Experience of both. You don't see any half serious cross country or downhill mountain bikers without decent hydraulic discs, the reason for that is that they have greater stopping power and are suffer less performance loss in adverse weather conditions.

Why do people think 25km/h speed limitation is safe?

My kit is fitted to a £900 bike so the quality of the components are suitable for the speed (25 unassisted on the flat). I'm pretty certain I could stop quicker from that speed with my hydraulic discs (203mm on the front) that a lot of legal e-bikes from 10mph less.

Why do people think 25km/h speed limitation is safe?

The majority of cyclist I see around Cambridge are already a danger to themselves and everyone else without giving them quick e-bikes. As someone who has a quick e-bike I would like it to either (a) stay as it is, where the few motivated to build a quicker bike are likely much more experienced...

    Just a tthought.

I remember seeing some of these on mountain bikes some 15 years or more ago. They were crap from what I can remember - poor handling, wear rates and general durability. They never really took off and I've not seen any since.

    My Bike

So many people seem to think that this is quick on a peddle bike when it really isn't. Anyone who is reasonably fit and owns a halfway decent road bike will reach this speed on a daily basis, the only real difference between that and a quick e-bike is the ability to maintain it over a longer...

    LifePo4 battery usage

He does kind of have a point though; people baulk at the cost of a battery but the reality for me at least is that even if I half the quoted 2000 charge cycle life of my LiFePo battery (around £300 inc. delivery) that still equates to a petrol saving of around £8500 for my commute. This is based...

    Wear a helmet folks

I've had a helmet for a good few years but only started using it daily since I electrified my bike. The higher speeds I'm doing make it a sensible thing to do. I cycled for years without one though. If you're doing 15mph or so on tarmac the risks are relatively low depending on traffic...

    E-cat: Fantastic new energy source.

While this may very well be rubbish, I believe the point is that the input energy is what is required to start and maintain the reaction. The output is the energy generated by the reaction itself. So for example, experiments with nuclear fusion have involved firing high powered lasers at...

What is better,Shimano derailleur external gears or Shimano Nexus hub gears.

I've had an Alfine 8 for years and can state with absolute certainty that is not the case with this hub. For a town/commuter bike I wouldn't have anything but a hub gear. They are near enough no maintenance, super smooth gear change, change gear stationary and not prone to being bent and...

    More battery problems...

After four weeks of smooth running -12 trips and 12 charges - I've got more problems with my 48v LiFePo4 pack from BMS after replacing a cell that was dead-on-arrival. On Thursday it low voltage cut out a few miles from home and on Friday it did the same. I put it on a timed charge on Friday...

    Another cyclist seriously injured

Comparing a forum disagreement with the 1st and 2nd World Wars is probably stretching it a little... ...but I do get your point. :) Matt.

    Another cyclist seriously injured

I'd mentioned that the statistics on accident rates over time if are only useful if you also take into account changes in the number of cyclist in the same period. His response was to attack me and portray me as someone who didn't care for human life. I felt his aggressive tone and resorting to...

Obviously not. Fail to see how this relates to the original post though, and to be honest I take offence at your aggressive manner.

Do you feel vunerable on road?

Yep. People pulling out has always been an issue even under leg power, I've been into the side of a couple of cars over the years of commuting. The extra speed of my kit means I have to be extra aware, I wouldn't consider riding it without a helmet.

    Is Speed Dangerous?

Absolutely. Movement can only be described in relative terms since there is no way of defining a universal reference point. Interestingly, and with this in mind, if you take into account the fact that the speed of light is constant it means that time itself is different depending on the...
